It's cruel but it's reality, whether people like it or not: one is a unique event that can still have a happy ending. The other is so recurrent and almost weekly on a continent that is so fed up with those people (see Sweden and serious refugee-related crimes, quote, "Even Sweden Doesn't Want Migrants Anymore." Just search, you'll find heaps of reliable sources and even statements by Swedish Ministers on this subject) that it has long since ceased to be an issue in people's daily lives.

Pretty much their only chance is if the sub is found floating on the surface in the next 24 hours. If they’re trapped on the bottom, they’re screwed, and if it imploded they’re already dead. The worst part is if they are floating on the surface but aren’t found in time they’ll still suffocate as the hatch is literally bolted shut from the outside. From what I’ve read, the sub is an utterly stupid design and should never have been put to sea.

If there was coverage of the vessel with migrants as it was sinking, and it was somehow near impossible to save them, and there's a ticking clock element there, that story would've gotten almost as much hype as the submersible.

Well, the submarine is sort of uniquely horrifying. They're gonna take /days/ to die if they aren't found in time. It's not that they're rich, it's that they're dying in a novel, horrifying way, and there's still (IIRC) that hope of "oh well maybe they /won't/ die".

I mean, I'm not gonna go and research exactly how much people have suffered from a given tragedy. Not least because this doesn't have to be /worse/ to get more attention- just more novel, and more viscerally distressing than the idea of being lost at sea. The fact that we know exactly when they'll die if not found only helps to make it more interesting.

Honestly, I feel comparing it to the migrant boat is a bad comparison. The sub is getting the attention that it is, not because it's rich white people, but because there's a chance they are still alive and trapped inside. A far more appropriate comparison was the Tham Luang cave rescue in 2018, which had a similar amount of news coverage, and resources spent to save them. And that was poor people in Thailand.

Yep. If the submarine was 100% known to have imploded from the start of the story, nobody would care anymore. It's the search and speculation that keeps people talking about it — it's ongoing. Just like the immediate terrible resolute for the migrant boat keeps people from talking about it: there's nothing new happening.
