We (wife and I) have like 7 pillows we use (sleeping pillows...not counting those decorative things).
My wife can use any of the pillows without any trouble. Soft, firm, flat, tall. She thinks they are interchangeable.
On the other hand, I NEED my pillow. The same one I use every night...for years...It's perfect.
My wife thinks I'm a freak for needing a specific pillow. I think she's an animal not able to discern the fine points to a pillow.
I wonder how other people feel....

I have two pillows like that that I've had for over a decade... I keep washing them to prevent disustingness but they're slowly fading away.

I have four fancy pillows, one round one and various others. The only one that doesnt give me headaches is a piddly foam chip misshapen one.

I get used-to the pillow I use, and prefer it, but it doesn't take long to acclimatise to a new one.

I have 3 pillows, all relatively firm, but I will stick to one for a while then switch to another for a bit.

I have a trick policy for my pillows. The big heavy for my head and the giant Appa to wrap my arms around, and the knee pillow.

I'm with your wife. I can sleep on practically anything, including a rolled up jacket in a pinch.

I wish I could sleep easier but I'm not terribly picky about pillows.

Not having my pillow is one of the greatest issues with traveling, I am right there with you.
