walaishy
I'm not gay but I just got a sudden urge to marry a guy.
flordelasantillas
Can't do that, its called discrimination. If this absurd order stands, he can shut you out based on your race or your religion or possibly your education level.
Rendova
I would rather have a ski pass for Danish ski areas.
SirRealOfTheShire
What is the unmarried part? If a veteran's spouse dies, they have to get remarried in order to get treatment?
Madalchemist2018
Marital status is no longer explicitly protected so for a VA doctor is is dealer's choce.
lurker1989
So someone gives their work to the military - never gets married or gets divorced because their spouse is alone so much and the U.S. Govt (President Bone Spurs) is going to allow them to be refused medical care from the VA?!?! Where is the congressional outrage?
GoodChange
”Language requiring care… regardless of politics… has been eliminated” -why was that even in there to begin with? Like what’s needed beyond ”required to offer care”
IWasGoingToMakeEspresso
The US military is struggling with recruitment as it is. This will be yet another reason for potential recruits to decide that signing up is too much of raw deal.
IgnisInvictus
Because of course. I hate this timeline so freaking much.
woozle
I'm a disabled veteran and I really really really despise Trump.
friendsofsandwiches
Unfortunately, too many veterans in my area voted for trump, and would vote for him again over a woman, and especially a black woman.
woozle
then they deserve the bad crap that will happen to them.
putcleverusernamehere
Unfortunately, the bad crap is happening to all of us
youbetchamom
How does this help women?
putcleverusernamehere
Morgan Freeman: "But in fact, it does not help women"
thrashingcows
evilspock
Why the everliving FUCK is anyone listening to the US president - especially this one - about who they can or cannot treat? We already had a court case about civil servants and discrimination saying this wasn't allowed.
If you bet your career on being an asshole because Donny said you can - you deserve the fallout when he and you lose in court, again and again.
Pulger
Any medical practitioner who refuses to treat a patient for such trivial reasons should be banned from the profession.
BabyWitchErika
Not just banned. They should be put on a list and arrested for discrimination(you know, if the rule of law ever returns)
meganical
Have you met the U.S. healthcare system? It’s not designed for care but to milk the most money it can out of those suffering and in need of help
putcleverusernamehere
And felons and rapists should be jailed, and traitors should be hung, but here we are
atelectasis
*hanged
Gestalt7
According to Stormy, he's definitely not hung...
putcleverusernamehere
My bad
FiftyShadesOfMascarpone
So if they can refuse to treat veterans for political reasons, they could also refuse to treat MAGAs or republicans in general. And less than 10% of academics identify as conservative. Of course progressively minded doctors are unlikely to deny treatment to anyone, but in theory this could backfire monumentally.
Kyzyl
If a news story gets out of a MAGAt being denied treatment at a VA center gets out it's an absolute win for them.
"See you guys are just as bad!" and
"looks like we need to purge the VA of these radical, activist physicians!" and
"We need to shut the whole thing down!"
Khanamana324
Republicans are going to do that regardless.
FallingStar7669
There will be a little bit of backfire, as a treat. Then Agent Orange will replace all the doctors in the VA with sycophants.
Dracon27
Well, at that point he's basically helping the Dem veterans lol His followers will end up slicing open each other and that won't end well.
ede77222
As a veteran I would never disclose my party affiliation even if asked by the VA staff. They shouldn’t even be asking you for this
putcleverusernamehere
Agree, but I believe it may be public information
Rendova
My party---let me think---ah---ah--ah---POOPER.
annonymouse211
I know docs who work at the VA and not a single one of them would deny someone care FOR ANY REASON. Suggesting a doctor might elect not to treat you because of your political party sows only more mistrust in others. If you can't trust your physician to try and help you then who can you trust.

We now live in a country where masked "cops" literally break windows and drag people out of their cars and abduct them, sending them to die in death camps in El Salvador paid for by our government. Who *can* we trust?
somethingsomethingwittyhere
Where's the NRA and the other 2A people that keep saying how school shootings are just a small price to pay for an armed populace ever vigilant against tyrannical governments? /s
putcleverusernamehere
They're busy as paid mercenaries abducting ppl off the street
Nanoline
You know doctors who *currently* work at the VA.
Here’s the rub, as per the article - doctors working for the VA can be denied hiring or even *fired* now based on this criteria too.
All it takes now is one ideologue getting into a position within a hiring department at a VA hospital who feels protected from above enough, and they can start cleaning house of any doctors they feel are too “liberal” in their practices.
No guardrails other than “we hope they don’t get into power there”.
CurbYourClassWar
So the Hippocratic Oath is completely worthless and meaningless now?

Always has been. No, really. Not required to practice medicine, and surgeons can’t even uphold it and practice medicine.s
