Hey look Detroit is more than the abandoned train station and car plant
SomeDetroitGuy
Yep. Saw yet another of those "ruin porn" shots and had to add some from other sources.
SciPieInTheHole
Who happens to be the social media guy for the Detroit Chamber of Commerce
SomeDetroitGuy
Honestly, no - I lead a software development team. I'm just sick of only seeing ruin porn when people talk about Detroit.
freefl0w
Detroit visitors bureau has an imgur account?
DavidHaddix
This is about 5 square blocks of detroit. The only part that isn't garbage.
SomeDetroitGuy
I mean, more like 4 or 5 square miles but whatever.
ghostkll
This is my Detroit too
tehtaxidriver
https://youtu.be/GqfAzpTGPGo Steven Crowder touched on this.

I used to live right by #1
DasOgre
The thing that scared me most about Detroit was the drivers. If traffic went to slow, they would turn around and drive the wrong way on /1
DasOgre
/1 the freeway and go up the onramps. Saw about 30 people do this when I drove through there 4 years ago.

I visited Detroit on a Saturday, July 3rd and I can remember being downtown and not seeing a single car or person moving. It was weird.
SomeDetroitGuy
What part of downtown? That's very odd.
aiuta219
I was at a big hotel down by the waterfront.
SomeDetroitGuy
The waterfront isn't very active after dark. Greektown, near the ballparks are. It's very busy during the day or Wings/Tigers/Lions games
aiuta219
This was probably noon on a Saturday. That's what struck me about it. It was unearthly for a big city.
SomeDetroitGuy
Well, that area of town is primarily office buildings and stuff. Noon on a Friday is crazy.
ImgonnapartylikeitsCOVID1999
OCP really cleaned up that city.
SomeDetroitGuy
Fun fact! The opposite actually happened in the city. Private companies (Quicken Loans, GM, Blue Cross, Meridian Health, Olympia) pay for
SomeDetroitGuy
additional police overtime in order to get uniformed officers to patrol extra in the downtown area. They also pay for public trash, lighting
SomeDetroitGuy
and other services since the actual city is, ya know, bankrupt.
JerfyMcGriddles
Oh to be white and well-off
FutureVillain
Let me guess. Part of the BLM movement? Sounds like something they'd say
JerfyMcGriddles
You can fight progress all you'd like, but you won't win.
SomeDetroitGuy
These are all public spaces in a very affordable city that is overwhelmingly black.
JerfyMcGriddles
Metro Detroit, as of the census of 2010, there were 4,296,250 people, 1,682,111 households, and 1,110,454 families residing within the MSA
SomeDetroitGuy
The vast and overwhelming majority of those people don't live in Detroit, though. These pictures are from Detroit.
JerfyMcGriddles
Census reports 70.1% White, 22.8% African American... In the 2000s, 115 of the 185 cities and townships in Metro Detroit were over 95% white

SomeDetroitGuy
None of these pictures are from any of those cities or townships. They're from the actual city of Detroit.
tohnopain26
U must not have really been to Detroit have u?
JerfyMcGriddles
No unfortunately I don't have the money to just go traveling places. I've got bills to pay.
rachmarie65
ditto.
SomeDetroitGuy
Detroit is over 80% black. It's insanely affordable.
JerfyMcGriddles
I don't think you understand how broke I am.
SomeDetroitGuy
The DIA has an admission fee bit everything else here is 100% free.
OriginaIPoster
A lot of these pictures have a black majority in them...
JerfyMcGriddles
I don't believe we're looking at the same pictures, then, because I see one that's roughly half-half, and one that's majority black.
rachmarie65
Looks like pretty normal urban American pics to me? I don't get why the other guy think its a black majority?
JerfyMcGriddles
Because of the last image.
rachmarie65
It was probably an event going on. Or a specific neighborhood. A lot of urban towns have specific neighborhoods that are mainly minorities.
SomeDetroitGuy
Detroit is over 80% black.
