And the Cougar had the chrome bumper rise vertically at the end of the grille. This car has painted bodywork. My parents had a '67 which was pretty much the same.
Why did car manufacturers become so scared of doing stuff like this? It's cool AF. I know it's probably not the best from a maintenance perspective but damn it's cool.
Before 1980s Ford Taurus, the cars sold in USA could only have round or square sealed beam lights, so hide-away lights let them do something to style the headlight since the shape could not be change. I am distinguishing this hideaway light from pop-up lights that protrude from the body which were sometimes used to elevate the light to minimum height and keeping a low nose. Maybe cost and weight and ability to shape the light any way they like, they nolonger want moving parts.
Cost of building, Cost of maintenance (complexity), A lot of countries require headlights on all the time; turns out, also, pedestrian safety is also an issue these days, we tend to want the pedestrians to live trough accidents
Also, if you want coolness factor: BMW (and Audi) had *laser* headlights. Freaking lasers!! Cost of replacement for a new headlight? A little bit above 5000€, each.
