They could have just made the door swing out instead of in, or just not had a door there. I think some people just like to make their lives more complicated than they need to be.
Some places there isn’t room to swing the other way, especially if you’re trying to carry something down. This would totally work for my house, but a swing the opposite way would be very awkward.

I like it. If you can’t swing your door out, this is a clever work-around. No thank you on no door, especially if there are kids around.
