The Tesla models S and X are already fully-electric cars with starting prices of $80,000. On Friday, however, Tesla released the world's first mass-market electric car, the Model 3.
The Model 3's electric battery will run for 354km (220 miles) before needing a recharge and can go from 0-60 in 5.6 seconds, according to Tesla.
The company aims to produce 5,000 models a week in 2017 and 10,000 models a week by 2018. Buyers ordering now with a $1,000 deposit are being told to expect delivery by late next year.
“We aimed for a very simple, clean design, because in the future — really, the future being now — the cars will be increasingly autonomous,” Musk said Friday. “So you won’t really need to look at an instrument panel all that often. You’ll be able to do whatever you want: You’ll be able to watch a movie, talk to friends, go to sleep.”

The pollution produced charging an electric car is much much less than the pollutuon produced by a gas/petrol car.

220 miles is great for a commuter car. Charge it at night, charge it at work (if you need to). If they made swappable batteries...

I hope that someone makes a grille decal for the Model 3 (and new Model S), the front looks unfinished without a grille.

I'd trade acceleration for range. Other models have a 420 km range.

Musk was hinting it would have more range than the Chevy Bolt at 238 miles --guess that didn't happen.
