Audio cassette as data device... one of the most terrible inventions. I owned a Commodore CPC with such a device and it was terrible slow!

it sure was (i had one too) but it's not like there were a lot of alternatives at the time.

Don't know about CPC, but c64 had "Turbo Tape" software that pushed load speed to 10x higher. So problem was more in original ROM routines.
