Nerd community was historically the community of the outsiders. When nerd stuff became so mainstream we all started to hate it, it redefined what the outsider looked like, ie: the nerds of today aren't nerds as we'd historically recognize them.

I've been to enough cons and played enough DnD since the 80s to know that there have always been nerds out there with not just conservative but genuinely vile and abhorrent racist and misogynistic opinions, and the broad "nerd community" was very slow to push back against it. We can't just blame grifters.

Nerds have historically always been curious. And curiosity leads to learning and passion which leads to friendships. Tate and conservatives aren’t curious about anything. They build relationships around fear which is the opposite of curiosity.

Smart kid, he really hit the nail on the head with this one. This truly seems like one of the most central problems facing our young people in the smart phone age (many of whom went through extended unhealthy isolation and loneliness during covid that extended into young adulthood).
Everyone wants to belong. This isn't a new dynamic but the magnitude of this issue does seem new. It's an environment where Andrew Tate and other self-serving hateful predatory types are really striving.

There was a time in the 00s/10s where nerdiness was the mainstream. It wasn't just geek interests, but a minimum exposure to education mixed with the mainstream adoption of the internet by fan cultures/communities. A lot of it was corporate, but it was corporate chasing trends happening organically

What changed, is that algorithms, corporate interests, and aggressively tailoring culture to nerd/geek interests quickly turned the barriers of education and organic fandom into cultivated, cynical, culture that ceased to be the junk food of an excited demographic and became the slop that defined out entertainment industry. What changed was that communities of common interests became islands of media feeding tubes.

I do think there's something to the general loneliness epidemic. But it's not just male - everyone is feeling it. But young men and boys are targeted by these grifters, and it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy, driving them further and further down the rabbit hole.
