The Spintria, the 'currency of sex' in ancient Rome.

The "spintriae monedas romanas" was used as payment in brothels. In theory it was forbidden to use coins with the emperor's effigy in these immoral places, hence the use of the spintriae.

These are some of the tamer ones. Mom worked at the Canadian Mint and collected coins.

Man I wish so much we had legal, safe brothels here. Sadly I live in the southern US, land of Supreme Hipocrisy, where poverty is ignored but sex is taboo.

Guy gesturing above his head with his arm during the bj like “Fuck it, Ima do some ballet, I in da gym tonight.”

I always thought 4 was written as IV .
On one of the coins it's IIII .

Then again, I assume that one makes sense aswell?.

The act on the front was also the worth of the coin. So missionary is cheaper than reverse cowgirl etc

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not wholly accurate. Almost all the coins are Roman, but one is clearly Greek.

The first arcade tokens. Spend your money on coins you can’t use anywhere else.

Wait, are you supposed to put those coins in some kind of slot or...?

No matter what depraved sex act you have in mind, granddad did it first and he did it better.

LXIX, Nice

2 years ago | Likes 142 Dislikes 1

Actually, they called it Nīcaea

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I think these guys would write it LXVIIII, they didn't seem to have invented the "small number left of the right one subtracts it" system yet, look at those IIII and VIIII coins

I feel like I’ve been lied to. 4 is just IIII

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It used to be that way back in the day, before IV and IX were invented.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yes, I'll take a III a large VI and a VIIII to go, thank you.

Its like those nudity playing cards but coins. Glad to know even back than people were just as a degenerate as the rest of us.

Are the numbers how many hookers they want? If so, nice.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

It is interesting that at the time of minting, the numbering system is I II III IIII V VI VII VIII VIIII X instead of I II III IV V VI VII VIII IX X. The colosseum gates are labeled using the old system as well. Are roman numerals still taught in schools?

I've seen one theory that they were basically created for legionaries to be able to hire prostitues in places where they didn't speak 1/?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

local language, and the prostitute didn't speak Latin. That's why there's a sex act on one side, and a price on the other. The reason 2/?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

things like 4 are written IIII instead of IV is because it's simpler for someone who isn't familiar with the system to understand. 3/3

I once saw 1492 written as CIƆ.CCCC.XCII - apparently before proper M and D were invented but after XC instead of LCCCC started being used.

They need to make brothels 100% legal worldwide for males, females, and everyone else in between and treat it like an actual job where you get benefits and government oversight or unions to make sure workers are offered safe environments, and every mental or physical resource avaliable. The quality of the product would increase significantly! No more toothless crack whores.

If customers can go see legal sex workers, they won't risk going for the illegal ones so it also help fight human trafficking and slavery.

2 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

That's only if the legalized sex work industry is run well enough to disincentivize the black market alternative. Canada legalized cannabis five years ago. 43% of weed sales are still in the black market because the legal dispensaries are still more expensive, less convenient and don't always have better product. Government is seldom the most competent entrepreneur to launch new markets.

There will likely still be a significant black market for sex work even if it is legalized and regulated.

I'm well aware it won't stop it, it's probably too lucrative to just disappear, that's why I said "help fight". Even a 50% reduction would still be good to have though.

When Germany legalized prostitution they found it increased human trafficking. The same has been true in the Netherlands and Austria.

Also health care, sick days and a pension plan ( in the civilised countries)

Prostitution is often called the oldest profession. It's been with us since time immemorial and it's not going away any time soon. I makes absolute sense to have it made legal and to have it regulated to keep both prostitutes and customers safe.

I think it's just me but I find it weird for prostitution to be illegal, even strip clubs are sometimes illegal, it's not hurting anyone, and won't hurt anyone if it's legal and have healthcare coverage with benefits both financially and medically, it's gonna be even safer, for both the patron and the prostitute, heck, I bet it would even add more tax revenue and prevent some crimes against women. Although that's just me.

2 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 2

Yup, they have legal brothels in Europe and the sector is therefore totally free of human trafficking, exploitation, addiction/drug/health concerns! Very progressive.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I agree. But as far as the medical coverage, I know this might sound crazy, but hear me out, we could consider healthcare a basic human right and available for everyone.

2 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

And it should be, for everyone, sadly that's gonna be a dream that I'm sure will not be in my lifetime, or possibly ever.
