Hello Imgur! Welcome back, I hope you're in good spirits. It is once again time for a new dog on the block! Last week was a stunning performance by the delectable Memphis Dog. It stole the show and now currently resides at the top of my ranking, but can it be surpassed? Will its reign be cut short after only a week?
Let's find out!
So, the most involved portion of this dog is acquiring some Hawaiian sweet rolls. My mind over matter exercises have yet to poof them into existence and the roll smuggling racket is slow this time of year, so I guess I'll have to do this the old fashioned way.
I won't lie, I was really hoping I wouldn't have to bake again so soon. To stifle my nerves, I'm once again calling upon a recipe I found online to guide me through this. Fingers crossed!
Thank you, Baked By An Introvert! https://www.bakedbyanintrovert.com/the-best-hawaiian-sweet-rolls/#mv-creation-388-jtr
First, I need wets. More specifically, this is a pineapple juice-based mixture to put the sweet in "sweet roll"
Starting with 1/3 cup of pineapple juice,
1/6 cup buttermilk,
2tbsp of melted unsalted butter,
Lastly, 38g of honey. I still have my little kitchen scale and cups, so measuring everything out was relatively easy.
After mixing, I'm warming the affair in the microwave until it's heated up to 110F, which should be 43C
Next, I'm "lightly" beating an egg
Now, I can't exactly inquire on how beaten the egg feels on a scale of 1 to 10, so let's just say a cautious 4 and move on, eh?
Up next, the drys. In a large bowl, I'm combining 238g of all-purpose flour...
Along with 1tsp of instant yeast and 1/2tsp of table salt
Oh joy, one of my dough hooks is nowhere to be found! Is this just gonna be a thing now? Every time I even entertain the idea of baking, my mixers are gonna conspire against me?
In any case, the next step is to slowly add the pineapple mix, the egg, as well as 1tsp of vanilla extract into the mix until it forms a nice dough.
Last time I baked was during the China Dog (unless you wanna count the lømpe from Norway), and if memory serves, I had to omit several pictures on account of me making an incoherent mess with the dough. I'm gonna try to actually get some pictures this time around, starting with a nice floured surface!
Aww yiss, not too messy this time. The recipe instructs to form the dough into a ball and leave it in an oiled and wrapped bowl for a few hours.
Like so!
It was actually 90 minutes, but who's counting?
Hmmmmmmmm...
If I were a baker, I'd be able to tell you if this was or wasn't a good dough. It certainly rose, quite a bit in fact, but whether or not it will taste good remains to be seen.
Alright, now onto the roll part of the recipe. I'm gonna divide this guy into five equal balls. Again, on a floured surface.
Nice...I think.
Next, erm, I guess I'll just roll them out now? The recipe calls to bake them in spheres, but I need these guys to be long enough to fit a sausage inside, so let's...roll out, shall we?
I'm sorry.
Huzzah(?) Five sweet rolls in progress. Once again, I need to wrap them in an oiled pan for another 90 minutes,
Y'know, I don't think they'll rise like this..
There! Much better.
So...how was your day?
Once again, they have doubled in size. I was gonna move them back to that smaller pan, but honestly, I think I'll just bake them here.
After the finishing touches, of course. This is a mix of melted unsalted butter and honey. I'm starting to think the so-called 'introvert' behind this recipe *wants* me to get diabeetus...
No matter, I do this for the rolls!! Into the oven at 190C (375F) for 20 minutes!
And during that time, I can cook up some haute dogs. I felt bad for forgetting to boil them in the Norway episode, as so many wanted, so I'll do so here.
Wowzas, that looks...pretty appetizing actually! Huzzah! The recipe actually says to glaze them in honey butter AGAIN and then let them cool on a wire rack. Kinda wearing at my blood sugar's patience, but sure, why not?
Alrighty, time for assembly! I'll admit, this has taken a while compared to other dogs and my bed is starting to look more appealing by the minute. Let's finish strong and give the verdict!
First, punch a hole in the buns for the sausage,
Next, ketchup and mustard,
Next, fruit sauce- I mean VIOLA. Yes, yes, the fully completed Hawaii hotdog, that is definitely not missing an ingredient due to my forgetfulness...or anything.
So, how does it taste?
Call me Mr. Sweetroll, because these are a stark improvement from the China Dog! The texture is a lot more crisp on the outside, but the insides still remained warm and fluffy. I could definitely taste some sweetness in each bite, but I couldn't really tell you if it was the sweet roll or just the ketchup in itself. In either case, the sweetness does contrast the wiener (and the mustard) which gives it a nice balance.
As far as assembly is concerned, I appreciate the idea, but I can't help but feel the dog would work better with the sweet rolls just used as regular hot dog buns with a slit down the side. It would certainly make distributing the toppings much easier.
For what it's worth, I'm aware that this likely isn't an authentic Hawaiian hot dog. It has become fairly apparent that the list is only accurate to countries/states *some* of the time. Regardless, I had a lot of fun making this. The bread came out better than last time, and I could see myself making a sort of platter of these half dogs.
Still don't know what the hell fruit sauces are, though.

Huh. I lived in Idaho for over 20 years and never once saw a hot dog offered, or served, that way. Now the ice cream potato? That's a thing and it's glorious.
ChocolateCookieAndFudge
Went to a festival in France last week. They put French mustard in their hotdogs. Some bites were pretty loaded in mustard. That cleared my nostrils for the rest of the day.

As someone from Detroit, that is not a Coney. Bean-less chili, mustard and vadella "sweet" onion. Thats it.

I'm just here to say the Montrealer also has relish.

Correction on the Carolina. If you order a hot dog all the way youre getting the chili, onions, and coleslaw but you will also get mustard, mayo, and ketchup.

I'll take a New York with extra Sauerkraut and add caramelized onions and Dejon mustard

Had two Chicago dogs at Wrigley yesterday. So happy the fixin’s bars are back. They disappeared for a bit because of Covid. I skip the tomatoes though.

You know, I thought this sounded pretty bad from the poster, but yours actually looks kinda good!
IAmZephyre
You are doing God's work. Thank you.
Sultana
You “still have your kitchen scale and cups”? Sounds like your kitchen helpers tend to go walkabouts most weeks! Stirling effort on the baking, I’m so impressed! I thought fruit sauces would be like the juice from a tin of pineapples or whatever. Am intrigued if they’re actually fruity mayo or whatnot.

I don't know if it's Authentic (tm) but I did have an uncle who lived on the islands and an imgurian once gave me a touristy necklace that I wear still to commemorate my time there. Maui was the biggest leap into water I've ever made in my life. So take my good luck for today Swissy. I don't have to work. You're welcome

I say this every time I see this: I've lived in Idaho for 40 years and have never, once, seen anyone eat / serve a baked potato hot dog.
LazerHawkAttack
The Norwegian "hotdog" is the sadest of all hotdogs in the world. Pølse i lompe. Its a hotdog in a potatoe wrap.
AlrightlyThen
In my country we bake it with the sausage and ketchup inside
Allisrevealed
Seattle recipe is just cream cheese and grilled onions.
RainierCamino
Yup. The Kansas City dog is also bullshit.
ValueBear12
This. The onions are even optional at most places.

This is the way.

In Finland the traditional way is to cook them on a specific stone of sauna kiuas, sometimes sliced and stuffed with local cheese. If it's a wood burning sauna the sassages would have smokey flavour! My dad used to make chopped/baby veggies wrapped in tinfoil and topped with Aura blue cheese as a side dish. Then after sauna (always on saturdays as per ancient ways!) we would get dressed and pile the hotdogs and tinfoil bags onto the kitchen table and feast like kings and queens. It was magical!

Nakkipiilo!

Yeah sometimes, i also Cook my wiener in a sauna

Nice try, Finland doesn't exist. You keep getting more elaborate!

And I would have gotten away with it if not for you meddling gravies!

Alright boys and girls, rest easy. We staved off the Finn demon for one more night.

Careful now, Hawaiian sweet rolls are the kind of thing you'll mindlessly shove in your mouth until they're all gone
cre8majic
so soft and fluffy, you don't realize how fast you're eating them
isetprettygirlsonfire
Can confirm. Also make great burger/slider buns
AeternalDreamer
When I was a kid in Hawaii, I remember we had to raise funds for our school buy selling sweet Hawaiian loaves of sliced bread. I wish you could buy the actual sliced bread in stores too.
alwaysthecheesegrater
There's a recipe for baked ham & cheese sliders on Hawaiian rolls and they are a HUGE hit at parties. Or just to eat by yourself if you're in a fat mood.
FeminineBeeOnslaught
Melt a slice of Muenster cheese in between the bun and they will go even quicker
doppelfisch
Can confirm.

Looks pretty good! Puka dogs have the bun cooked around a dowel to prevent the interior from getting soggy. Fruit sauces are relish &/or mustard made with pineapple, mango &/or papaya.
wtforero
And here my mind went to using apple sauce in a pinch, though knowing it’s not an authentic item
moustacheKin
Excuse you, lilikoi/passionfruit mustard is used on puka dogs!
the1theycallGreen
I love Puka dog, 1 of the best cheap places to eat in Hawaii

Thanks, I wondered about fruit sauce--didn't see where he used it--just ketchup & mustard

He didn’t use it. :P
