Run a decent firewall, run adguardhome or a pihole. Wonder what all these ads people are talking about are.

Ad blocking is the only use for AI.

6 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh good. I thought this was just me or some kinda bug on my phone.

Yes! This is fucking annoying!

It's a feature.

Use DNS adblockers like PiHole.

6 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ads...? People still don't block ads, what yer is it?

6 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

App? Ad? I don't understand.

6 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Right? I'm on a website with an adblock and I've even censored out the mountain of crap at the bottom of the page.

6 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

6 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The problem is that you're using the app

6 months ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 6

I use the app with a dns ad blocker and got gifted emerald before they fired the human employees the app is better than the website for me currently.

6 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Use an adblocking dns at home and you won't have to worry about it.

6 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

and an adblocking DNS on your device when you're not at home.

6 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm running Firefox and uBlock Origin on my phone at a friend's house right now. Fuck MediaLabs.

6 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I actually enjoy playing the game ads that lets you browse X hours without ads. If I don't get the game I want, I close the app and reopen till I find the game I want.

6 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

ad blocker

6 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What kind of ad? Honestly, I've not seen any ads here.

6 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Yeah, tell that no-point noob to get rekt /s

6 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Because you have Imgur Emerald, presumably for free because of how many points you have.

6 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Neither have I. I'm guessing you don't use the app either and instead open imgur in a proper browser with much-needed security features like adblock. Good on you resisting the wholly unnecessary appification of the internet.

6 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

Just use brave or ublock ?

6 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Imgur has started to limit usage on mobile devices, specially on phones if you dont install the app. The site simply refuses to work if used on phone. Funny enough, it starts to work, if you put "desktop mode" but its fucked up. Also they seem to limit what countries can access their site. Sweden example is banned and funny enough, some usa states seem to also been banned. I tested with changing vpn locations and if you switch to blocked it, you get 503 error. At first I though it was error ->

6 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

but after testing its deliberate. They dont say you are blocked, they just send 503 error that goes immediately away if you change location again. App prioritises ads so it uses your data to first show you the ads and then doesnt give a fuck about anything else. This is now same old shit site, that tries to sell you stuff. OC content is limited, its mostly now women pics and ai slop. No more fun hand drawn or made content so much. lots politics. imgur is gone after latest owners bought it.

stop using imgur on your phone and browse it on your laptop. the experience is SO much better it's not even funny. the app is complete waste of phone storage space

6 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yep it’s annoying as hell. Haven’t seen that though on my home WiFi since I changed the DNS on my router to adguard.

6 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't see and ads on my phone since a while. My browser is DuckDuckGo since about 2 years

6 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've never seen that one. Just a bottom banner.

Settings > Connections > Moar Connection Settings > type text dns.adguard.com > hit save.
This is free... no downloads needed. Removes ads from all my apps (not YouTube ( Firefox + ad block plug-in for ad free YT)

6 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yeah, no. They collect a shit ton of your browser search data and sell it.

6 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Yeah, because Google and a lot of others do not collect your infos to give you better ads.

Even if what you say is true, I prefer to give the same infos to people who don't show me ads.

6 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

You are already giving it to Google if you're using a phone with Android, or the Chrome browser. Now you're just adding another layer of invasion and personal information access to a company that does not publicly state what it does with it, nor how long they retain it.

6 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As someone who uses dns.adguard, a source for that claim would be nifty.

6 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Adguard DNS is a Russian company, based in Cyprus, but all DNS requests bounce off of servers physically located in Russia. That's why the DNS queries take much longer to resolve. If you think your browsing history is safe with that Russian company, you really need to get answers you will trust rather than from some random person on the internet.

6 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

Spectacularly unhelpful, was hoping you'd already have found this out from a reputable source and could have shared instead of "trust me bro", but fuck me, I guess.

If anyone else is curious, I'll report back if I find anything useful.

6 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No fan of AI summaries, but in a relatively surface level search, I didn't find anything that contradicts what's posted there. Seems the servers have been in the Netherlands and/or Germany and they'd be subject to EU laws regarding privacy and data collection.

Can't find anything at all stating the servers are in Russia, just that the company originated there.

6 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I've never seen ads on imgur, because adblockers existed prior to the existence of imgur, and I'm not going to ever use a phone app when a desktop browser version of a site exists.

6 months ago | Likes 125 Dislikes 18

Found the gen-x er!

6 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I use adguards dns service

6 months ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

This one bit of information has saved me so much hassle. I've used it for years and it's priceless...and free

6 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There's even a mobile browser version of the site and it works kinda OK.

6 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just use your desktop guys, never use your phone. Just don’t go outside. Don’t have lives. Stay at home and only look at IMGUR on your computer, guys! Problem solved, throw away your phones, duh.

6 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 8

I wish you were smart enough to comprehend how desktop browsers can be used on a phone. I'm doing it right now with Firefox w/uBlock Origin.

6 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Download an older version of the app or use an ad-blacker.

6 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Invest in a small homeserver. I have never seen an ad on Imgur, and I have never used it on desktop, only the app.

6 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

6 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I do miss the app. I can't image/favorite react in comments. I don't get notifications for my follows. The website only goes back a few hours of posts. I left the app cause I canceled my subscription and BD just added mid swipe ads. Couldn't find an APK to roll back to that didn't force me to update. Running adblock now. I'm on imgur now only a few times a day cause of it.

6 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

^^ is 100% correct. Never, ever, use an app from a social media site.

6 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You wouldn't see them here anyway because you have imgur emerald

6 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well, yeah, but I mean, I never did before that. :)

6 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I assume the people that see ads on imgur are the same people that ads on imgur work on.

6 months ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 10

I assume it’s just people using the app on mobile without any sort of systemwide adblocker.

6 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

The desktop version is utter shit.

6 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Yeah, but the mobile version, like every mobile version of every site, is so, so, SO much worse. The only way they can really spur wide adoption of them is by actually removing features from the web version and only allowing them in the app.

This also allows them to track better and directly associate all that juicy data with your account personally.

6 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

For a long time they blocked mobile web for this reason. Desktop or app were your only choices for logging in.

6 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I’ve got an adblocker on my phone that works for apps as well as browsers. Fuck you business daddy.

6 months ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

What ad blocker do you use, please?

6 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

DNS 66

6 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is how I block ads on my phone

6 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Not the guy you asked, but I use Firefox+uBlock Origin on my phone, and don't get ads. As long as I use web, and ignore suggestions to open in app (which I don't even have installed).

6 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

AdGuard and Blokada can block ads (and trackers, etc.) system-wide.

6 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What KB said.

6 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Blokada 5.

6 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was apparently given "emerald" at some point and shouldn't see ads, but I've always used adblockers on my desktop since I've been here so I've never seen an ad anyway.

6 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Blockada.

6 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

oh what the hell? i just learned i have emerald. i have no idea what it is or what it does because i've always had ad blockers.

6 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Yeah they used to give it to you after a certain level of karma and awards I think. I had it on a previous account never even used it, deleted that account at some point and wondered where all the ads came from. Same with blockers it's annoying on the app though.

6 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Try using dns level add blocking on your mobile device . Mullvad vpn has free dns servers that block a variety of things including ads. As do ControlD.

6 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's a gift -period- of Emerald, not forever emerald. Once it runs out, probably in a month, you gotta pay for Emerald. And you have to specifically activate it in your account settings.

6 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I got it years ago due to high points or something. I dont work here. Talk to a manager.

6 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was given an emerald years ago and still going.

6 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It depends on the version of free Emerald. I know some things like the Imgur Arcade gave limited duration Emerald status. Some of us got permanent Emerald status after reaching some point total over 100k points. Might be 110k? Mine didn't activate until quite a while after 100k.

I'm not sure if they still do this for point milestones.

6 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Like others, I was also at some point given free Emerald by Imgur, and it yet hasn't run out. Then again, I'm not sure I'd notice, since I'm running heavy ad blocking anyway. Though, do longer comments also come with Emerald?

And the obligatory "Fuck Business Daddy."

6 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Longer comments were just a general upgrade last year. People still stuck on 150 characters are on an older version of the app.
