Weight loss goal: achieved

Left - age 22 / 240lbs / June 2010
Right - age 27 / 185lbs / Feb 2016 (height, 6'1")

I've pretty much always been chubby, ever since I was a kid and also through high school. I was picked on and bullied as a teenager. After high school I decided to really hit the gym. I gained more muscle and was in better shape but I continued to struggle with losing excess fat and I hit a dead end with results.

I decided to really clean up my diet around ~1 year ago

Things I stopped eating completely:
Fast food (Domino's, McDonald's, Subway, etc..)
Junk food (processed crap you can buy at gas stations)
Store bought bread
Donuts
Fried food

Thing I cut back on/hardly ever eat:
Cheese, cookies, candies

Thing I used to eat & what I switched over to:
Sugary drinks (fruit juice) --> water
Monster energy drinks --> Coffee
Beer --> Wine
Ice cream/cake -- dark chocolate or home made fruit sorbet
Frozen pizzas and the like --> home cooked meals
granola bars (Cliff) --> homemade granola w/ nuts & dried fruit
flavored sugary yogurt --> plain Greek yogurt
chips/pretzels (snack) --> celery & carrots or apple or almonds

For daily lunches I started eating a lot more vegetables. We buy packs of microwavable steamer veggies (broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, snap peas, etc..) It's a very easy and inexpensive way to make sure you are eating enough veggies.

I also eat a lot of quinoa or brown rice for lunches along with either grilled chicken or steak, sometimes salmon.

I really fill up at lunch time, it's my biggest meal of the day.

For dinner / post gym, my lovely wife makes me a protein shake consisting of:
Almond Milk, 2 scoops whey protein, chia & flax seeds, cinnamon, vanilla, 2 cups leaf spinach or kale, peanut butter, plain Greek yogurt, banana, ice and then we switch up the frozen fruit of either pineapple, peaches, blueberries, strawberries.
The smoothie takes up the whole blender (~60oz)

If I'm still hungry after that we'll make a dinner similar to what we eat for lunch or have a salad.

I also had to learn how to resist and say 'no thanks' when people offer you delicious food at family gatherings.

My next goal is to get rid of all the blurriness on my face.

TL;DR - I was chubby with just working out, got leaner with eating better.

Some people are speculating that my weight should have stayed the same from gaining muscle. I should have mentioned that my pant size went from a 38 to a 32 so there was considerable size and weight loss here. I'm not 100% sure what I weighed in 2010 but 240-250lbs was my heaviest.

With the beer-->wine thing, I should have mentioned that I scaled back my drinking all together. When I do occasionally drink, it's 1-2 glass of wine.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I read it as I stopped eating candles!

10 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 1

Me too, especially since a few images back there was a post on a dude who spent $3,200 on candles per month..

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

That guy should probably cut back on candles, too.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Blurred face doesn't count as self +1

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Noice

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

FYI, my goal is your apparent start.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You need to take a Claritin bro.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

id be happy just to have the same body as the guy on the left.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I am now, like you used to be. I hope that I will look in the future, how you look now. Gratz.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's damn inspiring

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Checked comments to insure someone had mentioned his nipples.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You know, good for you and all...really. But this post should be titled "Shredded Bod Goal: Achieved" The "before" looks like many "afters".

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I wish I could look like the first picture. I am 215 and look like a 250.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Have you tried growing taller?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I seem to be stuck at 5'11. Got any tips?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Exercise. Eat right. Die anyway.

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 3

oh fuck, i've running 5k a day for nothing?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Had a good friend, fittest guy you'd ever met, ate right, ran every day, no drugs or alcohol. 55, prostate cancer, dead in three months.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You're gonna have a much worse time later on being unhealthy though

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You're fine as fuck. Good job, OP!

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

What do I have to do to look like the picture on the left causes I'd be happy with that?

10 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Amen

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

All I did was cut out obviously crap food, beer, and go on a decently long walk every night. Went from 220 to 195 (6'4")

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

How long did it take you to start losing? I went from "Eat anything & everything" to relatively healthy & bike 1hr daily no loss for a month

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

April to August with pretty consistent weight loss during. I should note too I've never really been into soda, just milk/water.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

After about 2 weeks I think I had loss about 5 pounds. I looked like the picture on the left to begin with.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The face blurrieness might be a congenital effect - do you have any bigfoots in your family tree?

10 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 0

Yeah I sized up and cut by changing simple things. I didn't switch beer to wine cause sugar but went to clear tequila. Lot of good aspects

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sugar is sugar no matter where you get it from. How much sugar you take it is what's important, sugar is a very important nutrient 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2/2 to the what all the latest trends are telling people. You're better off getting sugar from fruits and wine rather than candy and cake.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Calorie snack cakes and brownies. Usually eat two or three of those a week and I'm set.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah that's completely true I get most of my sugar from fruits but also a nutrition company where I'm from makes the perfect 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I wish I was like you were when you were fat.

10 years ago | Likes 124 Dislikes 2

all he did from the before to the after was learn HM01

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"fat"

10 years ago | Likes 43 Dislikes 2

I think that his "after I hit the gym, but before I figured out my diet" picture.

10 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

6'3" and 240 here. That first pic was still pretty solid muscle. Wish I looked like that :(

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

He never said he was fat, he said he was chubby. If you are fat, this is your goal. When you are chubby, right is your goal

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 2

I know. I said that myself because if that were me, I would think of it as my "fat" me and my "buff" me.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Except the before pic isn't chubby... Maybe not toned, but definitely nowhere near chubby.

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 7

It's definitely chubby. Look at his stomach and chest. He's chubby, not obese

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

You people have crazy definitions of chubby. Any body fat at all is "chubby"? For real?!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

"My next goal is to get rid of all the blurriness on my face." Upvote just for that. Store bought bread though? Is that bad?

10 years ago | Likes 716 Dislikes 1

Absolutely. Wheat causes inflammation in the body. Store-bought bread is high in calories, sugar, carbs, etc. I've cut out bread entirely.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

Depends how it's made, but depending on the type of flour and amount of sugar and salt used it can be incredibly bad for you.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Really depends on what country. Some of our bread is very healthy.

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

General white bread and even wholemeal are processed foods of a sort, they contain excess ingredients such as sugar and saturates.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

about the blurriness. when did that start? has it gotten better as you improved your diet?

10 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

Search for "Sugar: the bitter truth" on youtube. It's an hour long, but it goes in depth on how our bodies process sugar and the <1/2>

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Reasons why it's so prevalent in our diet. After watching, you will scour your local bread rack to find a loaf that doesn't have corn syrup.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It generally can't be done, though you might get lucky in higher end market like whole foods.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's basically cake.

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I dunno. It's carbs. A typical slice of bread is around 60 kcal, one slice of cheese is around 100 kcal, add butter and you're close to

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

200 kcal. It adds up. That's bread made entirely from wheat. Other types of bread are better or worse depending on sugar content n stuff

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

cheep bread is just about dried school paste. best to make your own. it isn't that hard. It just takes some practice.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I do make my own. Home made bread is still a load of carbs though. But I eat bread about twice a week so it's not too bad.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Home made bread is so good. I make whole wheat bread that is really good. the recipe came with my Kitchen Aid mixer. there are other breads

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

that are made with other ingredients that are suppose to be low carb

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sugar, carbs and all that rot.

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Sugar ist carbs and carbs are a type of energy source. What is your point?

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 6

by that logic since ETOH is a type of energy should you consume that unchecked as well?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Watch the 'air' episode of 'Cooked' on Netflix. Will totally change your perception on bread. Plus it's a great series.

Just finished binge watching it, first time tearing up watching a cooking show. It's a beautiful series.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

(1) I watched that episode last night. It didn't gross me out like I thought it would but it did simultaneously

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Harry Balzer is my fav

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm up voting on his name alone.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

(2) make me want fresh bread and give up store bread. Thanks for the recommendation!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

what about bread from the bakery, the bread that goes bad within 1-2 days. or really, 1 day (I freeze it)

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ask them if they use commercial yeast or sourdough cultures.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Reminding for a replier

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Will do, thanks!

Pollan's book! It lead me to read Tartine and make my own sourdough, which I am actually eating right now as I browse.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It inspired me to buy a sourdough starter - It's almost ready! ..Any tips for a first time baker?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Tartine's method has been reliable and pretty foolproof for me. Paying close attention to the smell of the starter and the texture of 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

which varies so much by temperature. Give it TIME. Sourdough cultures work slower than commercial yeast. If you have a dutch oven 4/?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

flour. Paying attention to the texture of the dough when you do your folds will let you know how much time you should give for proofing 3/?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

the dough you make. Make sure the water you use is 80 F/26.6 C. Make sure you disperse your leaven/starter in water before adding 2/lied

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

consider cooking in that, (450 F for 20 min with lid on, 20-25 min with lid off) as that will allow steam for the rise & dry for crust. 5/5

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I proofed for a total of 16 hrs. I forgot to score the bread before baking! *face palm* tasted nice and sour tho! http://imgur.com/g4qezLw
