"I cast a high-level spell for roleplay purposes we need to long rest before we set out."
"A long rest is only 6hrs sleep and 2hrs light activity I only ever do light activity anywhere anytime so can my long rest be after only 6hrs?"
Casters are better at martials in everything! Unless you have more than one combat per long rest. But playing multiple combats per 'day' means casters don't get to cast anything other than cantrips, which feels bad (imagine only being able to do one low-damage thing every round in a combat?!), so DMs make fewer combats per long rest than the rules were balanced around.

As a player I definitely prefer martial over caster, and when I do make a caster, I usually make them a supporter. I just think they're more interesting then a caster from a point of character building. I don't know, it's kinda personal taste at the end of it.

As an experienced Nerd Enjoyer (wizard, sorc, and a bit of cleric), unless all your campaigns never get past level 4 (assuming 5e), how are your casters blowing through all their spells fast enough to be stuck on cantrips? Sounds like poor resource management by the players to me.

Eh, I'd argue a lot of casters are still better than martials even with a reasonable number of daily encounters, beyond very low levels. Good spell selection should include a number of spells that can last most of an encounter. Something that attacks every round, manipulates terrain, or forces multiple saves. That's the sort of thing that wins encounters
