The whole biology of cold blooded animals is all about doing the least it can for as long as possible. And apparently gestation is no exception.

Afaik there are no viviparous octopuses, so "gestation" technically doesn't apply there.

All the same, it's fascinating to know that there are eggs in the world that have to sit for over 4 years before hatching. Especially with an animal that rarely lives that long after hatching.

Yeah it's pretty remarkable, especially the mother surviving that long without eating. But I guess it does make some sense if you consider that the speed of chemical reactions generally increases exponentially with temperature.
