Science is not equal to studies, but many people don't distinguish between these 2. This is a problem, because almost every major study in the last decades was bought to influence people. Many people lost trust in anything that comes from a "white coat".

I'm an engineer and I think science is mostly good - of course! But I get where some (depending on their social status) have varied opinions. They see social media as negative on teens, AI bad on jobs, energy consumption (due to more tech) bad on environment. Science can also solve (or will solve) these but some people don't share my optimism bcoz many things in their lives are negative. I read the related articles. People's diverse living experiences make for different views of science.

For example, during COVID many of my fellow African Americans didn't see the new RNA virus like I did. I thought it was new awesomely cool science. They thought "here we go like the Tuskegee experiments all over again, now 'they' are experimenting with the whole population". Tuskegee happened. I'm an engineer (an expert at applying science) .. so I'm just asking you to be careful not to confuse science with resulting tools only. Personally weaving something is still science if you study it, make theories, perform experiments and confirm if predictable results are statistically consistent. Science is the result of the scientific method at work which can be applied to almost anything. I think equating science to be technology or (more broadly) the tools which result is a lil limiting.

It's also the way we do science, which has become riddled with fraud and grifting, as well as the way we teach science, or rather don't, as 30 minutes of nature trivia. Kids graduate having done 12 years of science class work but never heard of a p value.

People who misuse the science are also part of society. So whether it's the nuclear bomb or AI cheating artists. You have to look at all of society to judge whether or not science is good or bad. Because it's also the application of science. Of course the big question is what does good or bad mean?

By judging the science based on how some asshat decides to abuse it's potential, you're condemning all science to be seen as bad, forever. No matter how good something is, there will always be someone who finds a way to use it maliciously. Take the Internet for example. It's a truly wonderful thing. All of human knowledge accessible to anyone at any given moment. However, it's also full of people who use it for truly terrible things. The technology is great. People are the problem.

It's also true that science has delivered DDT, leaded gasoline (it's still in the air & water btw) and nuclear fission bombs. For me, I think the good outweighs the bad. The VERY cool RNA science of the COVID vaccine saved millions. But how does one even define good & bad? Science's advances can be negative or positive for an educated person. Social impact is emotional & subjective for anyone. To me it seems they're measuring primarily optimism .. not necessarily understanding of science.
