Too afraid to eat or drink anything. Waiting for the dentist to open in a couple of hours to see if they can fix it now.
Edit/Update: dentist was able to see me not long after they opened and I got it refilled.

Happened to me last year, was eating an orange tootsie roll and suddenly felt something super hard in it. Thought the candy had like a solid kernel of sugar or something in it and spit it into a bowl. 10 minutes later I realize there's a big gap now in my tooth suddenly and really glad I didn't toss it out. Got it fixed no problem though
Grapeape2000
Done this more than once

The double stranded magic flossers got mine a month back.

Your dentist will still blame it on you not flossing enough
smegheadenergy
That's what you get for flossing
melandevile2000
I’m jealous. When my filings fall out I have to wait for that tooth to also break apart and fall out.
UnapologeticTeaEnjoyer
I feel you. Yesterday morning, my dog dislocated her hip. Told myself, it's okay, I have my job, I can still pay to have her leg fixed. Then I got fired.
whatspaulplayingtoday
Glad it was a happy ending.
PorneliusHubertII
I had a filling that was in my mouth for the better part of 2 decades decide to pop out while I was 2000 miles from home and in a different country. Fun stuff.
veesee
I've been trying to floss more. I remembered to do it about a month ago and now you've reminded me so I'm going to go do it. Thanks!

Dentist put a temporary crown and 'buttress bridge' on Monday. It came off this morning. I feel for ya. :-(

Had the same thing happen, popped it back in with superglue.
JohnSmithterms
Never experienced pain like a tooth infection after the same thing happened to me and I could not get an appointment for 2 weeks and just carried on eating as usual as I figured it was such a small gap it would be fine. Tooth got infected after a week or so and the pain was incredible night and day. Get it done asap.
HsuDoNihm
So much better than it popping out while eating! You didn't break a tooth or swallow the filling this way. A win's a win.

Dental drama: when your mouth decides to play a surprise game of "guess where the filling went" during vacation, leaving you with a souvenir hole and a story for the ages.

The moral here? Never floss
iluvdis
Yup! Another reason to not floss!!!

I once took my dentist's lecture to heart and flossed everyday for 6 months, and next visit they told me to floss even more. So I stopped tossing all together and the next visit they applauded me for taking good care of my gums. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I totally agree. Went to the dentist and they poked and prodded a cap of mine till it cracked. Fixed it, but while flossing it broke again.
noReallyIamPrincessBob
If something in your mouth breaks because someone was checking it or it came out with your floss, it was broken/loose/leaking and NEEDED to be replaced. Otherwise you’ll get a cavity underneath it and REALLY have a problem.
UncleRat
But when you are at the dentist, you can tell them that your filling came out when you were flossing. Just be sure to say, "while I was flossing," very slowly.
PalaverQuader
see? thats why i sleep in.
KR1570F
if they can't fix it right away you can get a product like DenTemp or CVS Health Dentist Strength Temporary Lost Filling & Loose Cap Repair. It's a white clay like compound that you can pack into a small gap or even put the filling back in if it was a substantially large filling. It can also be used to re-adhere a cap/crown that's fallen off temporarily. The stuff won't last if you eat anything but it will fill the gap and keep it clean between eating
Cats2cats
Most big chains carry it. Amazon used to, don’t know if still do. Caution though also purchase dental wax. Even with the temp filling there can be sharp edges.
Fawin
Thanks for the heads up. I didn't know such things existed.
marthafarquar
I used DenTek Temparin Max Home when I was on holiday and it was fine for almost four weeks until I got to a dentist. As a lot of the Amazon comments say just follow the instructions and give it a couple of hours to set before eating, preferably overnight.
GhostOfAnrui
I idly wonder if I can use these compounds as Gap filler on models...
iamagopher
Depends on what happened to the tooth. Sometimes using that stuff will just cage in germs and cause rapid decay till you're able to be seen. Turning a filling to a root canal (speaking from experience and dental recommendations)
RichardHardley
yep! +1 and you only lose an hour instead of most of the day.
TH3G3RB
I second this

Shame on my dentist for not advising. My bf had had a tooth filled thrice now, and it still fell out. Would have been cool to know there was something we could do in the meantime.
Retronyx
I had to wait 2 months to get a filling replaced that had fallen out wtf
noReallyIamPrincessBob
People who are having pain/infection get priority over a broken tooth that otherwise is not causing a problem. They were probably already booked, so there was nothing available unless there was a cancellation. If you could come in on a cancellation, that is a good thing to let them know so you might get in sooner.
Parad0xia
I always keep a little tub. This stuff is a life saver.
imgursmyfirstluv
I kept those temp fillings in for months before I could afford to get it fixed

"CVS Health Dentist Strength Temporary Lost Filling & Loose Cap Repair" is one hell of a descriptive product name.
klobberer42
Decided to impress my dental hygienist by flossing 2x a day for the 6 Mos between cleanings. Got my first cavity in 20 yrs between 2 molars! Floss is a conspiracy to help big dental and big cavity! Stopped flossing and no cavities in the last 5 years.
GlowstickJedi
Damn, you must floss more vigorously than me

Just jam a bunch of aspirin in there. Or rub some dirt on it.

Honey. Its an extremely good preservative.
It was used in the past as help for burn wounds and open wounds in general.

Holy shit you guys can go to the dentist on the same day?
2graves
My old dentist came into the office at two am after a concert for me. Miss that guy
Fawin
Not usually, but if they have the availability they may take me. It's considered an emergency.

I had a filling pop out last December while on vacation. Kinda sucked.
Aeonika
I've been able to if it involves pain
dap6000
May be waiting for them to open so that someone is there to answer the phone.
prfesser
When calling my dentist his machine gives a second phone number for a 'dental emergency'. If he needs to treat an abscess he'll be in at 2am if necessary.
emcat11
I was called to ask if I could reschedule to make room for an emergency appointment for someone in pain. I was like hell yeah, a reason to put it off and feel good about it
TZO2k15
In better developed, civilised nations, you can...
ObeySparky
The few times I've needed minor work, yeah.
SacrificialClam
Yep. But it also costs hundreds of dollars.
EroticZombiePants
Possibly not at your regular dentist office, but an emergency is an emergency. Losing a filling might result in an exposed nerve, and since your mouth is riddled with bacteria, it will be really susceptible to infection. I've had an abscess before. Those are terrible. Ended up having a root canal.
barstr7
I had a filling the low-cost clinic put in crack so they drilled it out but there was a cavity beneath that needed a root canal. Clinic no longer does it so I needed an endodontist. They gave me a list of endos to see but none of them take Medicaid. No one in my state does. So I'd have to pay $3000 out of pocket, which I can't afford. So I've been living with a cavity and a gaping hole in my tooth for 7 months. Gotta love America. I feel so free.
GeneralWho
That sounds like way too much for a root canal; when I had one that insurance wouldn't cover, it was around $1500 cash price for root canal+crown and the dentist was very willing to split that up into payments.
Fawin
Land of the free (to be exploited).
bezobzira
for under 1500 , fly somewhere normal and get it done. 1200 of that is for the flight. for 3000 you can fly in, fix it, see Venice, fly back
