We all have been students at some time in our lives, and academia is not that much forgiving if the same situation happens to students. There is almost no do over. So, let's not use double standards. Fire her.

You're not saying everyone should be held to the same standard, you're saying the standard should be lowered to the point where some cheating is allowed because it's harder to get away with it

If I take Tesla's technology and invent the radio, Was that plagiarism? Because that is what Marconi did. It isn't just the source that we look at, it is the conclusion. You can be absolutely derivative, and still create or postulate something completely new.
