Edit: wow most viral, gonna use this opportunity to say I’m scheduled for thyroid cancer surgery end of the month and I’m heavily debating canceling my surgery altogether with the state of the world. My tumor is slow growing and hasn’t changed in my most recent 6 month ultrasound. Scared to be layed up in bed recovering with all this shite going on, or having to rely on medication to survive but maybe can’t get access to it.
Dunno. Weird times. Be safe everyone
TheBaconFriar
Hey friend, I know you added it in an edit, but please don't cancel your surgery <3 I had a tumor on my brainstem and surgery was scary - Jan 6th happened a week later. No matter what happens I'm rooting for you!!!
DecentUsernameUnavailable
@OP - re: thyroid cancer surgery - I totally understand you. I feel the exact same way about the world. But, that said, if we separate world anxiety VS. the surgery / tx regimen, thyroid cancer is an easy lay-up. 48 hr. in & out surgery, couple of days in isolation eating some glowing iodine, done. Then you can be cancer free and wait for societal collapse like me. We are all in this together. HMU if you need more info on thyroid / long-term life post-op. Easy sauce.
Magjee
I had a full thyroid removal 2 months ago, it's better out. You don't want to risk spread from waiting

Even VP Vance said it was a bad idea. How bad does something have to be for the leader of the Republican party to do that while JD Vance says is a bad idea.

As the president often says, he knows more then the generals.

Yes. This administration is batshit.
It'll probably take two weeks before the entire rest of the world vehemently wants us the fuck out of Iran probably kicking us out of military bases in their countries concurrently.
And a month before our administration either backs off, calling it a win, or drops a nuke, because (quoting Trump here) why have them if you're not going to use them?

blaghart
It also can be debunked pretty aggressively, since Iran's economy is 1/60th the size of the US' and so their drones are cheap because they have to be. They have no ability to manufacture them fast enough to actually use them as more than an opener, and they've spent half a century building up the amount of missiles it will take them approximately two months to consume. They literally CAN'T sustain themselves in a war vs the biggest military on earth.
SchuKadaj
Accurate username is accurate. But man the greed of the USA top is unlimited.
DukeDarkwood
Everything put in place to limit it was dismantled over the last 40-50 years. Reaganomics, the gutting of wealth tax, and Citizens United - those three things let the rich take power, and they've done everything they could to keep and even increase that power.
For as long as wealth has existed, there has been greed and corruption. But rarely has it ever been so thoroughly entrenched - and every other time it has, it led to revolt or collapse.
blaghart
Obama's "one month war" in Syria lasted 9 months, so don't be so encouraged by the prospect of Trump backing off quickly. That was a guy who knew what he was doing, and he still couldn't end the war in Iraq or Afghanistan and took almost a year to get out of Syria. Trump, meanwhile, is an arrogant stubborn ass who won't back down until he's forced by some outside element (as he was with his capitulation in 2020s election) and so will keep this going until he feels he got what he wanted (he wont)
Dansosaur
It's almost as if this is why the US wanted to secure Venezuelan oil so badly.
Beardedgeek72
Too bad it's of exceptionally shitty quality.
Magjee
It's plentiful, but difficult to extract. It's sort of a long term plan that hasnt been planned so well
Scahrossar
While the analysis might be on point, it sounds like it could be true, it does skip over a few things. Iran has been attacking neighbouring countries including NATO ones, which could (and to a limited extend already is) drawing in various european countries. Secondly it pissess off a *lot* of people when you block their oil. A lot of them might not like the reasons for it, but they'll still end up helping the invasion so oil and gas will flow again.
Noahbalboa82
It *sounds* like US/Israeli forces have heavily degraded Irans ability to mass a large missile/drone attack on military targets hitting them now, so they are saving their munitions for these other targets to erode neighbor support for US/Is, and they will then pressure the US to back off. Hard to say. I thought we would see thousands of Shaheds, swarm boats and ballistic missiles hit US forces and Israel by now.

Exactly, the learned from, and improved upon, the Vietnam strategy.
The US won Every straight up engagement with the NVA, but the US lost the war. They showed America can be beat without having to overpower, you only need to outlast.
fnordy
As my history professor was fond of saying re: the American Revolution: “All the Colonies had to do was not lose.”
EroticZombiePants
Militarily speaking, the Tet Offense was a disaster for the Viet Cong. They ended up with over twice the casualties as the US and our allies. It did a remarkable job at destroying support for the war among American citizens though.
HenryLongfellowIII
They were supposed to be beaten. They were not.
huffnpuff72
When you are invaded by someone, you have nothing to lose. You have to keep fighting - outlast them. America has no real reason to stay, Iran knows it can keep going until the US get sick of it.
ArcUlfr
They are in a far better strategic position than Vietnam ever was, too. AND they've had decades to prepare. Yeah, Trump really put us in a bad spot here. I guess he copied Putin's homework.
torokunai
Kinda similar, we let the Russians ship materiel into Hanoi, and also let the Chinese ship shit by rail more or less. Iran is a bit more geographically exposed, but does have a solid Caspian connection to Russia and the Chinese will insist they be able to navigate where and how they please so the Iranians should get support there, too.
Crazy geopolitics here because India hates China so India may not be the greatest fans of Iran and China being so buddy-buddy.
NKato
India is probably going to interdict arms shipments from China to Iran. Probably.
vonHoopla
On the other hand, Vietnam era US wasn't insane enough to launch a half dozen nukes to sterilise the area. Like, I dare anyone to tell me Trump isn't that insane. Then tell me he can't just illegally remove anyone who denies him. Please. Cos I literally have no faith that the US has the backbone to stop him.
Cornflakes91

Even nukes won't solve this. The number of spread systems and depths of tunnels mean that you can destroy city centers but that means diddly when the army is dug too deep to be harmed by them.

Wasn't Admiral/General MacArthur the one during the Korean War that wanted to Carpet Nuke Korea? The moment he got debriefed on Nuclear Armament, the guy was like, "We need to glass this country and prevent people living here."
torokunai
unfortunately the current GOP power structure subscribes to the Dolchstosslegende, that the Democrats were too timid and should have just bombed Hanoi (i.e. murder from the air Vietnamese people like we murdered Japanese in '45) until they surrendered to our terms (i.e. leave the Saigon regime alone). So now these idiots have launched a war and I have no idea how it's going to play out this decade.
TsukariYoshi
Which is doubly funny because despite all of these armchair generals' insistence that they study warfare and whatever other fake credentials they claim, the idea that air bombing can accomplish strategic objectives on its own is one of the most well-tested and rejected military doctrines in history. It's been tried in nearly every conflict since we realized we could drop shit out of planes, and in every single case, bombing alone is not enough and usually INCREASES a population's resolve.
SalmonTheWise
NKato
Trump is probably going to push the nuclear button, but warn the world at least an hour in advance so it doesn't result in retaliatory nukes. What this does, instead, is uncork the nuke genie from the bottle for Russia vis-a-vis Ukraine, and then we all look at Trump like he was responsible for nuking Kyiv.
torokunai
yup we're in the shit now as bad as '45. Anything's possible.

Thyroid removal requires constant endocrine replacement medication after the fact. It sounds like OP is concerned about not having access to it, which is a valid concern because that SUCKS. In her case, I’d hope the hospital would be able to account for that, though.

USA, yes. Trump? Well, you aren't talking about those Epstein Files right now, are you? That's the disgusting part. He suffers nothing from all this, and stands to gain a huge distraction.
ElroydIsGone
It is worth noting, that everything stated here has also been known to military planners, aka those people who have not been replaced by utter morons (yet). They try to counter it by eliminating the mobile launch trucks of the missles, because there are much fewer of them around than missles, and 1000 missles stored in a tunnel with a collapsed entrance and without launch vehicle can do nothing, but the drones are another matter. The are very, very many, they are easy to hide and also to launch.
zHurk777
This has already been playing out in Ukraine with drone warfare. Drones are cheap and deadly.
Solski
It may sound accurate at first glance but everything requires verification. I immediately caught the THAAD missile production time to be BS. It doesn't take years to produce a single missile, we make around a 100 a year with plans to expand to 400. What takes years is to replace the whole battery, consisting of 6 to 9 launchers, command vehicles, and the radar system. The radar alone would probably be a good couple of years. We lost a radar in Muwaffaq, that's not going to be easy to replace.
mieper3
I'm no expert but i became suspicious when he first writes that the interceptors cost between 500.000 and 4mil, and then next tweet they cost between 12 and 15mil?
HenryLongfellowIII
Patriot vs. THAAD, of course.
Freakscar
The actual numbers may be faulty (and if so, should be corrected), but if the calculation 'cheap & fast made drones vs expensive & slow made missiles' is in itself factual, the point does stand. Imho it's sort of a division fallacy - just because his numbers are (assumedly) wrong, doesn't mean the whole argument (it'll 'ruin' the US fighting 'this way') is wrong.
But yes. Always double fact check any number.
ricpaul
Just heard a youtube vid today saying the Patriots are not even 5% effective against maneuvering ballistic missiles. I have no way of checking accuracy of the statements, but would be terrifying and make the overall statements above even worse. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gbQI_IYz6uM
Solski
I'm not saying he doesn't have a point. The fact the Pentagon ignored 4 years of drone development in Ukraine and did nothing to prepare for that type of threat is infuriating but facts matter and overestimating production times by an order of magnitude doesn't do anyone any good.
mieper3
Indeed, but also: Even if it costs usa alot more per missile - interceptor exchange, that might not matter if iran doesn't have the capital to keep up.
Like, if two people play monopoly and p1 loses an avg of 1.000$ per round around the board and p2 loses 5.000$ per round, p1 will still lose if he owns a mere 4.000$ and p2 sits on 990.000$
Freakscar
While such a calculation >in a vacuum< is indeed true - do you, realistically, believe Iran is so low on funds this'll be an actual problem for them (or their [open&hidden] support)? Wishful thinking at best, I'd say.

First point to note: Trump / Hegseth have done NO strategic planning. This is just a kneejerk move by Trump. Hegseth is the perfect puppet to carry out his idiotic orders. All they have is a few tactics.
Second point: After the bombing (which won't really accomplish any goals that matter) they have no tactics or plan. They can't start a ground game. The air game will be done.
Third poitn: This is a game with no goals and no way to win.

Israel plans though. It’s beyond trumps infantile brain to understand that not all leaders are like him a greedy narcissistic self serving twat, it’s beyond his comprehension that you can’t beat an ideology with a few missiles

Constantly. Constantly, over years, and years, Trump has repeatedly accused other presidents of planning to start a war with Iran to stay in power. He said Obama would do it, he said Biden would do it, and he said Kamala would do it too.
With how obviously broken his brain is, you can tell the things he fixates on very easily; using tariffs, annexing Canada, how great dictators are, and here the idea of a war with Iran to enact a fascist takeover. It's always projection.

Fourth: this time is not USA in war is Israel-USA. In this order.
Israel has a plan and there is no exit strategy because what they want is to enlarge the “free to bomb” area to all the Middle East as they did to their neighbors since the 60s.
Netanyahu even declared months ago that they will fight “antisemitism” and anti Israel everywhere.
USA is the stupid golden goose that Israel is using ‘till will be alive.
NorthmanoftheNorth
They do have a plan. America has done this before and failed, and have learned from those mistakes. You cant's get regime change by bombing someone. If you bomb them and try to install a new govt, it won't be legitimate in the eyes of the public.
You have to wait until the people revolt, then "help them" by bombing the govt.
You can destroy and occupy with ground forces, but the people will hate you for it. Ground forces need to be local, and you can help the by supplying equipment and
NorthmanoftheNorth
Bombing their opposition.
Iranians revolted, Trump and gang bombed.
Now all that's missing is the kurds taking up the fight, and US to give them superior weapons and intel.
Then hope for a regime change that isn't based on religious zealotry to the deprimert of the entire world.
hoefty
I don't think this is even Trump's idea. Israel led us into this conflict. Until we make a meaningful stand against Israeli influence we're going to be at war in the Middle East. Evangelical Christians are trying to trigger Armageddon.

This isn't a kneejerk move. He's using this for a few reasons, mostly that he's owned by Israel, stopping the Philes from being focused on, various economic incentives for the rich when he fucks up the economy again x5, and so on.
Grimmrog
there is a goal, making the rich richer. and the poor poorer. the more regular people are poor, the more can rich abuse or aquire their assets easier and cheaper. Also rising oil prices means oil producing american companies making loads of higher profits. As well as arms companies now making tons of profits. Thats the goal, the war itself happening is the one of the goals.
WoeToHice
To your second point: why do you say that they can't start a ground game? I understand that there's no way in hell that they can _win_ a ground war, but we've seen over the past year just how easy it is for the regime to _start_ shit. So what am I missing?

They've seen the writing on the wall, and they are going for one last hurrah, so they can milk the world while it's still dependent on oil. Makes me sick to say, but the inverse of #3 is the only way out:
This is a game with no goals, so there's no way NOT to win.
Trump is going to jerk his war-boner until he gets tired or frustrated, then he'll roll over and DECLARE VICTORY!
And the wretched, disgusting truth is we're going to have to Emperor's New Clothes it and agree, "Yes, you won! So powerful! Very peaceful! Greatest president!" so he can save face and go back to just robbing us instead of sending our kids to die needlessly
VinnieJonesDiary
But that only works when the opponents agree to play along and let him save face, Iran won't. They will make it very very clear that the USA backed down and lost, they wont agree to a peace, they will keep throwing drones at US bases in west Asia. He will get mocked and humiliated, the only thing he actually cares about.
RadasNoir
We've already seen him do that time and again with the stupid tariffs, so I can believe he'll try to pick up his ball and just go home when things continue to go poorly with Iran. Except, as other posters are pointing out, there are WAY more consequences for trying to walk back a fucking WAR.
fastlaserjockey
There will still be long-tailed consequences that hit from multiple directions: destabilizing the region, losing face / possibly totally losing access to former allies, slow economic recovery as fuel producers slowly return to normal operation, potential random terrorist attacks from the groups Iran has fostered.
But all that shit is going to happen whether we stop now or continue for a decade, so we oughta get out now, start preparing our defenses, and not kill/traumatize another generation.
NKato
Hegseth is too stupid to realize this. If he had been smart, he would've 86'd Trump and forced us to pull back from hitting Iran after the first day of bombing.
At this point, you're absolutely correct: Instead of wasting valuable resources on an offensive that will never work and only serve to create more threats towards us, we are better off backing out and building up defenses immediately. Especially in regards to anti-drone warfare.
We should be writing a blank check to Ukraine.
Eleshar24
Hegseth is just a drunk edgelord.

Just to show how horribly this whole operation was planned:
1. No one thought of refilling the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) before skyrocketing the oil prices
2. No one thought about how to secure the Strait of Hormuz or how to respond to it once Iran closes it
3. They had no plans on how to get Americans out of the area
4. They had no plans on how to respond to Iranian drone swarms
IcelandHotNinja
Some people did. Some Trump friends bought a ton before this and made big bucks later by selling those barrels at higher value.
LordHelmetTheThird
5. They didn't ramp up the interception production, or even refill storages, before the operation began
6. Didn't secure any buy-in from any partners
7. Didn't follow proper protocol when operating in allied skies (see the 3 downed F-16's by friendly fire)

(Also I do hope Ukraine told us to fuck off when asked for help, since we'll just share notes with Russia thanks to Trumptard)
Beardedgeek72
No they didn't.
1. There are no rules of war.
2. People have been fighting wars like Ukraine does since before the siege of Troy.

They did in fact not tell us to fuck off, if only because Ukraine would very much appreciate if my country would get its head out of its ass and start helping out. It's a meaningless gesture in regards to Trump, but I imagine they're hoping that others see them making positive gestures and remembers them if/when we ever get back to talking about our allies like adults again.
