I was watching a Northern Flicker pick apart the bark on a cut section of tree trunk, when the local red-shouldered hawk swooped in, grabbed it, tumbled 15 or 20ft across the turf, & came out on top. When she (mama hawk) tried to lift off, the flicker made such a struggle attempting to escape that she had to bring it back down to immobilize it, resulting in another 3 or 4 minutes of spirited wrestling, thrashing wildly in the dusty gravel & dry leaves until it was subdued, then flew off with it.

And you'll find a headless rabbit corpse later. I had to take 2 of them away from my dog earlier this week. There's a nesting pair of Redtails near me.

A hawk. But, not a red tailed hawk. Red tails are more of a rudy brownish tan color with orangish plummage on the underside of their tail feathers.

Also, red tailed hawks are smaller compared to this beast.

Looking at it again, I think you’re right. When I first pulled up, there were two of them and saw the red tail fly off leaving this one alone with the rabbit. I had assumed that this was the mate, and I just hadn’t seen the color in the tail. Now I’m wondering if what I witnessed was a theft.
