I've been saying this ever since troops were deployed in CA. That was the litmus test of "will the military follow illegitimate orders blindly or obey their oaths" and they failed it hard. Way too many delusional people were holding out hope after that. :/

Not if you use the precedent of previous instances this has happened. Is the President SUPPOSED to notify Congress first? Yes. Does he have to. Not really. I don't like he did this, mostly because he wants to lie about why. But that does not make it illegal. The War Powers Act gives him 48 hours to notify Congress. That needs to be changed, but it was put there to allow for an emergent, necessary use. That isn't what this was.

I disagree. This isn't a movie. Taking a stand and defying authority - even when you're right - has real cost in the military. You can go to jail. You can be killed. That doesn't make them cowards, just not willing to throw their life away. Orders always come from someone who outranks you, so every order represents an asymmetrical power relationship. There are plenty of career service men and women who are not traitors. They're just in a shitty position.

And if you remove the non ring kissing leaders and person's of authority that may be looked up to for guidance, you have the instant problem of being more able to convince others to toe your new line OR ELSE.
Tons of people joined to escape poverty, or shitty home environments, or worse. Not many people join due to familial service history.
