And on that note fuck Veterans Day and ever saying thank you for your service again. Not that we ever shouldve hero worshipped people just for being in the military but now completely gone.
I've been saying this ever since troops were deployed in CA. That was the litmus test of "will the military follow illegitimate orders blindly or obey their oaths" and they failed it hard. Way too many delusional people were holding out hope after that. :/
Yes, yank commenters, tell us more about how free and fair elections whil talking about Trump. Although I suppose the second time around, most of you did willingly elect a nazi peodphile, so good for you, out shitstains.
Although of course, he still wasn't actually elected by the majority of registered voters, because you cunts just can't do anything right.
Calling Maduro Venezuela’s “elected leader” is truly stupid. He lost the last election and refused to leave office. Not justifying Trump’s attack last night. Just saying that just because Trump did something awful doesn’t suddenly turn the piece of shit we attacked into a saint.
Yup ... which is why nobody should ever have been hoping the military would stand up to this (or any) administration. It is the authoritarian arm of the government, nothing more.
Not if you use the precedent of previous instances this has happened. Is the President SUPPOSED to notify Congress first? Yes. Does he have to. Not really. I don't like he did this, mostly because he wants to lie about why. But that does not make it illegal. The War Powers Act gives him 48 hours to notify Congress. That needs to be changed, but it was put there to allow for an emergent, necessary use. That isn't what this was.
Elected leader!?!?!? Maduro had falsified elections to be an illegitimate president for a THIRD term. What he did was illegal. Why are Americans so fucking dumb! This was a good thing just please go through Venezuela forums, insta, reddit, anywhere with live reactions. Please search for the people. All Latinos are celebrating.
Well, time for popcorn. Seems that corrupt leaders are not immune to being kidnapped. That's nice, normally they are considered above reproach and immune to this sort of thing.
Sure. Doesn't stop US government business with other dictatorships, like the Saudi's. As an excuse to invade another country, it's a total non-starter.
There's a reason why as soon as Cheeto got back in they weeded out every military member that wouldn't kiss the ring. The good ones are gone. The only ones left now are the ones worth executing for treason.
Don't you fucking say he weeded out every good one while I'm in the Army. Don't you fucking say that. You shut your god damn mouth and you don't lump me in with those fuck heads. You keep me out of his god damn mouth and get off the fucking internet and go do something about this like I'm trying to do.
I thought it was an absurd suggestion, as if they polled everyone and expelled half of people serving! I haven’t seen any exodus… But my friend, what will you do when they drop you in Venezuela?
I disagree. This isn't a movie. Taking a stand and defying authority - even when you're right - has real cost in the military. You can go to jail. You can be killed. That doesn't make them cowards, just not willing to throw their life away. Orders always come from someone who outranks you, so every order represents an asymmetrical power relationship. There are plenty of career service men and women who are not traitors. They're just in a shitty position.
"No you don't understand, they aren't cowards, they are just reawwy scawwed of getting court marshalled, and that's why it's ok that they're goose stepping along into a fascist dictatorship." Give me a break.
This is exactly the sort of situation that no small part of the oaths they took address, and they are failing to uphold that oath. One made with full knowledge and context about what upholding it could potentially mean. Sounds like cowardice to me.
The "good ones" were far from innocent. You don't get to that level of the military with the blood of innocents on your hands. They were drawing a line in the sand and some chose not to venture into -obvious- war crimes.
The good ones were the ones who refused to bend the knee to kiss the ring. The ones currently in Venezuela are what's left. Ass kissing traitors that deserve something worse than the death penalty and I say this as a US combat veteran.
Our oath was to the American PEOPLE and the constitution and instead crybaby supreme decided everything in the known world needs to swear allegiance to god king emperor Dump.
To be clear, they kicked out, like, a dozen people, maybe? So, out of a little under three million soldiers, there were a dozen? Let's even be super fucking generous and call it a hundred.
And if you remove the non ring kissing leaders and person's of authority that may be looked up to for guidance, you have the instant problem of being more able to convince others to toe your new line OR ELSE.
Tons of people joined to escape poverty, or shitty home environments, or worse. Not many people join due to familial service history.
EscalatorCongestion
Not an elected leader - the elected leader is in hiding
ToasterDent
The civilian boat attacks were to purge those that followed the law instead of following the orders.
sadurdaynight
Dual signal. A) trump does what he wants. B) if congress opposes this they'll get labeled terrorists and arrested

There was that one guy in Vietnam who refused illegal orders, I think.

That's alot of talk from someone without the two biggest navy and airforces in the world.

Put the actual opposition leader back up where they are supposed to be, any other is M.O. for despotism. He'd move there and commute to Mar-a-Lago

lots of people aren't saints, still doesn't give the us reason to unilaterally invade another country.

The leadership purges were to ensure no one will refuse an order, legal or not.

They will do what their CO tells them to do. They are trained from day 1 to follow orders without question.

We've literally done this sort of thing before. It isn't considered technically 'illegal'.
MeatSweat
it is, in fact, super illegal

There being precedents (dozens of US-run coups) doesn't make something legal.
Niagaran
It's an act of war that didn't go through congress. They also killed 100+ Venezuelans (not counting the illegal strikes on boats).
How would it be legal?

Maduro wasnt their elected president. The Nobel peace prize winner is their elected president. Maduro refused to leave power.

You misspelled "Trump's puppet"

She still won the election, whether she’s aligned with Trump or not.

Maybe but most of the military are all for making this a dictatorship.

I mean, you're not wrong, but like... when the pposition is fucking Trump, i don't wanna hear anyone mouth off about legitimate elections.

I think the UN should send in peacekeepers and election observers. The US clearly can't govern themselves anymore, they need our help to be free.
