huh? Conservatives have been against treaties for many decades now, if it goes against their preconceived notions. They supported NATO when it was against the commies, but now with a nationalist and religious Russia? They are against it. It's not much different than their consistent hatred of the UN, WHO, or the state of California.
They've been pretty open about this for a long time, have you not been paying attention until Trump got into office?

I’ve actually hated NATO for many many years and consider myself quite left. Just because Trump has found a reasok for hating something doesn’t make it good. Lots of good decent people also like diet coke.

The right-wing media has had a problem with the EU, and more specifically NATO for about 2 decades. From claims they do not pay enough of their GDP for their military to the fact that the US is subsidizing their socialism.
