Wheeler and an accomplice robbed *two* banks that way. His entire theory was based on the idea that lemon juice was used as invisible ink. So it should make his face invisible to security cameras, right? Nevermind that he and his accomplice could clearly see each other.

When confronted with the tapes he was shocked: "But I wore the juice!"

#7 legendary story from my hometown. “Charles” made some acid and sold it to some guys. Charles is an idiot and did not actually make acid. But he used the money to buy and use a buttload of drugs. Acid buyers were very mad and wanted their money back and threatened to kill Charles. Who proceeded to get a mask and walk to the bank down the street, stand in line, got some money, and was immediately arrested once back outside. And got 20 years for it.

My hometown had an attempted bank robbery through the bank drive-through. The would-be robber brandished a knife… Tellers locked the front door and called the cops.

#1 the purpose of this vessel is to provide a very stable platform for taking measurements. With most of the barge's mass below the water the wind and waves have almost no effect.

Here is a ~17 min Simon Whistler video about the vessel. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxbtBnya440

Noel Gallagher is one of the people who has the black american express card. He shows it off in an interview.

#1 Is there hopefully an alarm in said bathroom when the ship is changing orientation?

2 weeks ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

No, but there is a shoulder harness and lap belt to keep you on the pot when it tilts.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you're the new guy, the alarm is everyone else telling you to go first.

2 weeks ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

And a mandatory order to always, always flush after using.

2 weeks ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

If I recall correctly, there were 2 bathrooms at 90 degrees offset. A lot of other stuff was like that too.0

Ozempic was discovered by someone researching venomous lizard spit. The "no idea how this research benefits you in any way" takes are really getting on my nerves lately. You have NO IDEA what research will be useful or in what ways before you do it. It might not even be useful in the near future even. But ALL science is, eventually, useful science.

The MRI was originally invented to study the bonds between atoms. Many years and dump trucks of cash later, someone realized it's really good at imaging the body, like it could differentiate between organs / blood vessels / muscle / fat etc in ways previously thought impossible. So we wouldn't have the MRI if it weren't for scientific research some people (read: idiots) would consider useless or pointless or a waste of taxpayer money lol.

Dude was studying the bonds to understand what happens in deep space to. Completely unrelated to medical science but was integral to making one of the most useful machines in medicine.

SO MANY discoveries were accidents. Vulcanized rubber, PTFE, the neat low-tack adhesive on post-it notes, etc, etc.

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

making rat skin invisible also has incredibly obvious utility if you're at least somewhat knowledgable about animal testing -- it means that you can look at certain internal organs and how they're affected by various procedures (e.g. medicine, physical regimens, etc.) without having to cut open the rat.

#6 THE Buran, as in the one that went to space, was destroyed in 2002 when the hangar it was stored in collapsed. The one Musa owns is called Ptichka, a Buran-class orbiter, a non-flying one than was ~95% complete at project cancellation. His ownership is contested by several parties.

I wonder if the bank robber got the idea because you can use lemon juice as invisible ink.

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

According to some accounts, he did. Though his accomplice supposedly convinced him by making him smear lemon juice on his face and taking a photo where he wasn't visible (probably used another pic) and that was enough to convince him lol

#2 would this work on people? I have "small veins" according to every nurse that needs to take my blood and I'd rather deal with invisible skin than a needle digging around in my arm

2 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I vaguely remember hearing about this new tech where they shine either UV or infrared light that makes your vein glow under the skin. IDK if/when it'll become standard though.

1 week ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I've had it used on me, it works eerily well.

I saw one of those American Express black cards once. Was used on equipment for a rich dude's home theater. I handled the audio setup for it. The set of speakers crossed into the 7 digits.

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

When I was working I had a corporate American Express card with no credit limit. The drawback was that it had to be paid off in full every month. On 9/11 a group of my fellow employees were stranded in Mexico. They used one to buy a car and drive back to the US.

A little, but some is actual gibberish meant to mock other Internet slang. "Clavicular was in the middle of showing off, when some awful women came up and harassed him and stressed him out. (super sad about it). Is disregarding the awful women while proving yourself better than awful men more useful than pretending you're more handsome and sexually capable in the club?" Like I said, mocking gibberish.

The merchant fees on that card must be terrible

2 weeks ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 0

Not really. Amex doesnt really negotiate the way Visa and Mastercard do but the highest they charge a merchant is 3.3%

2 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

If your minimum annual spend is a million bucks you aren't shopping at places that care about merchant fees.

2 weeks ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I once read an article about an ordinary Amex card. The writer wanted to test out the bullshirt "cachet" their commercials claim, so they bought a bottle with an Amex, and then bought another, presenting a Visa. The cashier visibly brightened, and asked if they could tear up the Amex charge, and put both on the visa, because as rapacious as visa is, Amex is worse.

2 weeks ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Merchant fees weren’t our concern (former bar/restaurant manager here). It was that Amex would pull back all funds, including the tip, days later if their client said it was fraudulent, even though they were present and paid themselves after being shown a receipt. There was no fraud by our staff, only them. So we stopped accepting Amex.

From the consumer side though, they're great. We bought a phone off eBay that was "new in box". It was not, and the manufacturer refused to honor the warranty. The seller refused to return it until AmEx got involved. Refunded an hour later.
