It’s a relatively common trope in anime. I think it also hits the correct balance for people who find it exotic but don’t go in for full furry. Plus at the end of the day it’s generally just a cute girl with accessories, so it’s an easy cosplay that’s pretty accessible for people who want to dabble but not spend $4k on a costume. Or add some flavor to a base cosplay by tacking ‘catgirl’ on.

Yeah, my assumption is that people assume that catgirls behave very similarly to cats. For both men and women, that creates a social contract that pre-determines how you're supposed to act as the cat[boy|girl] as well as how you're supposed to be interacted with by the human. Your roles are defined. The scariest part of dating for a lot of people is figuring out how to interact with the other person, and finding common ground, if any. If you're both into catX, then you know that's already there.
