In every single place I have worked, the frontline staff are the ones to go out of their way to make up for the cruelty and callousness of those who's job it is supposed to be to provide for the people served by the workplace. I've seen nonprofit CEOs cut the food budgets for disabled people while demanding expensive toilet paper in their private office bathrooms. Meanwhile the underpaid staff actually supporting the disabled folks would bring food from home to share.

If I ever have the means, I wish to set up funds at as many elementary schools as possible to provide free meals for any child.
Kids need to eat and you can't learn if you're starving.
I think that's the impact I want to have and may possibly be able to have someday.
I hope I can manage it. If I can't, I hope someone does, and that steps are taken to make sure no one can take that money for any other purpose.

I worked at a school and each one had a closet of clothes, tooth brushes and other such hygiene or food items. We even had a shower in the old area of the school for kids that don't get one. This shouldn't be how it is. They should just be fed and clothed at home but they aren't. America just makes me sad.

Our highschool principal hired illegal immigrants who made incredibly good tamales and enchiladas that were cheaper than the state's "reduced cost" lunches. Those ladies did not charge the poor kids and it was STILL cheaper for the kids who could pay.

Our school has a food pantry. We also have parents who don't feed kids, but tell them not to take food because pride (and drugs, trying to stay under police radar because convoluted logic). We do what we can.

My wife worked at an elementary school and it was against policy to feed kids without their parents' permission. Their solution was a freebie table where anybody could put food items they didn't want and anybody was free to take from it. She and other faculty would strategically place food on the table when one of the neglected (abused) kids was around so that "anybody" could take it.

We were VERY poor when I was a kid - like moving every 3 months, living in a car, showering at a truck stop, poor. Once a teacher gave me a coat when I was in 3rd or 4th grade. We lived in northeastern ohio, where winter is no joke. My mom got SO angry, because she thought it made her look bad. I did not have a coat. My mom cared more that my neglectful, shitty parents looked like what they were, than the fact her child was cold. A lot of parents are like this.

Technically they're paid for by taxation on citizen's income. The difference between Belgium, the UK and America is that the tax money goes to Police, prisons and the military instead of where people want it. Their system of governance has been so completely hijacked by lobbyists that the people they vote for don't even care what they actually want (affordable medical care, food for children, etc.).

Free school lunches also drastically improve school results as kids (as with adults) learn better when they aren’t hungry and actually have the energy to focus (thanks to the food). It’s good for society as a whole!

Keep in mind that history is written by the winners and Nations prefer to publicize things that make them look like a competent & stable country/power, not encouraging further rebellion.

voting would change this. we can see this. places do push to help students get feed. one party is often in the way. i dislike the dems and this isnt one of the subjects where they are close. republicans are the road blocks. the party officially stands on kids should work, not get an education. kids shouldnt get paid much, and kids should just accept being hungry.

Tell me, when exactly was that. The last Democratic Presidency? The last time they held control of both Congress and the White House? Or when they held all three branches of government? Republicans are very good about using a combination of veto power, bad faith congressional bipartisanship, and judicial overreach to stymie any liberal progress. Democrats could be more ruthless and effective if they were more unified, but they haven't actually held all the levers of power in some time.

Obama, for instance, championed the "Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010". It specifically increased federal funding for meals for school children and raised standards for what they could be fed.
Until Trump rolled it back.
The reason its impact was muted in many places is that the US education system is managed at a local level. States and Municipalities have much more control over what/whether poor school kids eat than the federal government does.

Republicans in charge at the State level do their best to strip funding from public schooling and end social programs like free lunches. So, even when the federal gov gives them money, they don't pass it on to the kids.
Even if Democrats do manage to do some good, a Republican will usually come along to undo it a few years later when enough goldfish-brained idiots vote for them or stay home.
And then people complain that "nothing's changed". Gee wiz, wonder why?!

I’ve had MANY arguments about this with my Supreme Right family in the past, because I give money to homeless people and beggars when I see them. “You KNOW they’re not really getting food and/or necessities with it!! They’re HOMELESS. They’re spending it on DRUGS!” Well, they told me they were hungry. I’d rather take that chance than to walk on by and leave someone starving. If they weren’t being honest….? That’s between them and the lord.

I grew up around people who didn't think prisoners should have cable tv. Prison isn't supposed to be cushy. Then I went to prison for a bit. What little we were treated normally helped people survive. I don't want to enable addiction, but how bad and boring must life get if you're homeless? If I give someone cash and they use it to escape painful reality for even a little bit, I kinda get it.
