Always look at the bright side of life... (how do the penguins whistle?)

Inspired by a FP post about fast.com and speedtest and ISP shenanigans...

FP edit: Don't be mad but as a solo "dev" I can't allow myself not to mention that I made this and would be thankful if you checked it out if you're on steam: http://store.steampowered.com/app/551580/ thanks!

I am surprised that no one is talking about Google Fibre. Google gonna come say the day whatever the outcome.

Ive got fios gigabit. I get 985 Mbps on fast.com.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No link to the other post?

wasn't logged in and I lost it, maybe someone can help out but it's somewhere on FP for sure, recommending you use fast for rechecking spd

fast.com tells me 300, i'm paying for 250. Do i win?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was in Bosnia, beautiful country when it snows because it hides all the garbage in the rivers.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I have Hughes net and pay for 25mbps. A few days ago i tested my speed on fast.com and it said I was getting about 30kbps

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fast.com says 170Mbps, my Speedtest app says 120Mbps. I pay for 100Mbps.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I heard that God is a Serb, is this true?

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yea we pay $50 to $60 for UP TO top speeds but even then it would be like half in some places

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So I'd be rich in Serbia then? *changes tinder location to Belgrade*

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Probably. If you could earn in the USA/EU and spend here. Like... programming or something online.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sorry to hear. Paying 17€ for 300 mbps :) come to Lirhuania

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Its funny(on my phone over wifi) i get 20MB/s on fast.com but because of the fucking shitload of ads i get like 12 on speedtest.net

Are you a wizard?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The hell? That's my rent! How the hell can they charge that much for just your broadband?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You misunderstood, avarage monthly paycheck in Serbia is about 400$. He probably pays his ISP about 25-30$ a month. 1

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'm also from Serbia and i pay 30$ per month for a cable TV, 75mbps internet and landline phone 2

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Oh... Now I feel kinda stupid. Thanks for explaining it. Now that I read it again, it makes more sense.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yes, what he said, $25 a month for 60/4 mbps cable with 120 TV channels and 30 radio channels and 5Gb wifi a month across the country.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Here in the UK I pleased with 45 mbs

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was on 20 which was like the best you could get in Australia until recently. Now you can get 100 which is like 2% of places 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And its only lost like a few billion dollars in taxpayer money for that ya! 2/2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Mines supposed to be at least 100mbps, its currently 55 :/

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

yeah well SBB is kind of owned by George Soros so expect changes :)

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

True, true. We'll be part of west asap in that regard.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

@OP, look at the Belgrade boy, with fancy 400e salary. Go to Nis and cry a bitter tear of sorrow.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

USD, not EUR. I said median, not mine. Not from Belgrade. If you were snail, you'd be dead from all that salt you got there.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Jbt, don't be an edgelord.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Meanwhile I pay for 150 and get between 170 and 200. I have tested on fast.com, speedtest, and steam downloads

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just got 25mbps... they deliver 32mbps. :) I actually planned to upgrade to at least 50mbps as soon as I can see it's all working, but /1

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I just downloaded The Witcher 3's 32GB in only 6 hours. Much faster than my last, supposedly 100mbps connection. ^^

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Start streaming video games! Make you some money.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

$400 how often? Day? Month? Year?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Month.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Why can’t people clean after their pets?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Because balkans, and by god i think some people here force their dogs to shit on the sidewalk where right next to them is a patch of grass..

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've seen one guy clean up after his dogs. Others just don't care and police don't bother with it.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

One guy had a dog poop right in front of my entrance and I was like, "you're gonna clean that" and he just walked away...

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

it's pička materina

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Thanks. Tuka +1

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I pay for up to 100mbps and whenever I check it’s 108-110 mbps. False advertising I guess.

8 years ago | Likes 54 Dislikes 1

The lanes allow for much higher speeds. Some ISP's just choose to elevate your maximum a bit so you actually reach the advertised speed.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's pretty common to overprovision by 5-10% on high-speed connections. Nobody complains about getting more than they pay for.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

eh if you have a server it could overload it.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The usual physical network interface these days supports gigabit throughput.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I pay for 100 as well, frequently get close to 200. I'm a Comcast customer. I still hate and fear them.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I pay for 50Mbps and get 200-230. I think they might have raised mine for free.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

i pay for 150 get 240 on both fast and speedtest consistently so yeah

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I get 320 om my 300

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I get 4-5 of my 10. Hurray....

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I get 10-20 out of the advertised up to 100

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Try using fast.com instead of spee>dtest.net. Your internet is 'told' to be faster on speedtest.net, however fast.com is your real speed

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

Literally just did a fast.com speed test and after it had finished it said the service was provided by speedtest.net sooooooo...

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

150 on fast.com and 171 on speedtest

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Not necessary. Maybe Fast.com is fare away. Speed of light is not infinite.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's ridiculous. Geographical distance means nothing compared to traffic priorities and relay speed. Light can circle world <1/8 of a sec

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Lol 56mbps on fast, 101mbps on speed test and I'm paying for 100mbps. ?noredirect

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Your isp prioritizes traffic through speedtest

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

@OP Ja ti zivim u inostranstvu.. Jest da su plate bolje al drustvo i mentalitet se ne moze uporediti :)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Gastarbajteri sveta, ujedinimo se!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Tooo majstore :D

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ma i ovde je sad "kuća-pos'o" fazon, al' dobro, ko ima posao može se preživeti nekako.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

When I call and complain about my bad service I always get a sassy southern woman who has me use their speed test website, which never 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 253 Dislikes 1

First the listed speed is a max. Second that speed is only from you to their interchange point. Not necessarily out to the rest of web

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Fast.com. The ISPs can't prioritize traffic to it because it's owned by Netflix.

8 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 1

Well they can, but then people get faster traffic to netflix which would lower their lubricious profit margins by like 1%.

8 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

Lubricious... Smooth.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Don't say sassy, they take it as a compliment. A rude, obnoxious and irritating southern woman who thinks far too highly of herself

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Good point; I would take sassy as a friendly comment, in the same way “blunt” and “rude” can be used for the same person, but one is nicer

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Im convinced USA is an experiment to see how much bullshit a human being can put up with.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

No that's north korea

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They are right. Speed of light. Speed depends on https://blog.httpwatch.com/2008/08/14/the-surprising-effect-of-distance-on-download-speed/

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Distance. Also they do not own the Internet and are not responsible for lager ISPs they interconnect with.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Every time I test mine and it’s slow I get a month free

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I mean this with out rancour for you folks: America is fucked. Like, as a country... I'm honestly just waiting for civil war part 2

8 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 2

Electric boogaloo?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's not a civil war if it's a revolution.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

Wasn't that what the Civil war was spun as by at least one side?

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

so many places are fucked but from what i'm seeing only the poor ones actual riot. as long as the greater population is not starving

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

nothing seems to happen, we bitch but that's about it. unless shit is really bad nothing will really change, they won't let shit get that bad

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Returns a result below their acceptable threshold. It's dumb as hell, I live in a rural area with only one broadband isp. 2/3

8 years ago | Likes 162 Dislikes 1

I do trace routes and pathpings with the cmd, save it, and force them to answer for lost oackets and excessive ping

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm not looking forward to the new rates and website packages that I'll get to "choose" between. Cable companies really take advantage 3/4

8 years ago | Likes 103 Dislikes 1

Of rural communities while pretending like it's some massive burden to their infrastructure. My community has a fiber line going through 4/5

8 years ago | Likes 73 Dislikes 1

It, but we can't access it because our isp doesn't provide it. Dumb as hell. 5/5

8 years ago | Likes 72 Dislikes 1

Yup same here. It's ridiculous. I pay the same that other people pay for 100mb down

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

With all this net neutrality and ISP bullshit in the US I'm really glad to live in Germany right now... the regulation is strong over here

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

It's not easy to hook up to phat fibre even if it goes near you.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Same here, I pay almost $60 for a 3mbps DSL connection from AT&T. The only ISP that is available here.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's worth noting that rural build outs actually are a significant burden. You don't pencil out. It had to be legislated to get phone 1/1
