I remember one episode where his daughter has a big confession of something terrible she did, and she's really reluctant to even tell him, but finally she reveals....that she jumped the turnstile at the subway once and didn't pay. He's all "If that's the worst thing you have to confess, I have majorly succeeded as a father."

Want to know something sad. That was in 2009. Firefly ended in 2002. The Serenity movie was in 2006.
That means this reference is older to us, than Firefly was to it, by any metric.

My ex and I watched it all the time. There was one interaction, Beckett was being serious with Castle and he glances just past her and goes "Oh, toys!" and wanders off while she looks exasperated. My ex says "Oh my God! That is SO us..."

Even if it's officially classified as season 9, I still regard Med School as the spinoff that it was. Wasn't horrible for being that, could've really improved with another season (or burned out its promise).

Yeah, once Marlowe left, the show's quality went down, and it suffered from "Moonlighting" Syndrome once Castle and Beckett finally got married. The Castle abduction/amnesia plot line was a definite shark-jump - those last 2 seasons were just meh.

It was set up as a season finale, not a series finale. They were fully expecting a 9th season, but got the rug yanked out from under them after filming was pretty much done. Thus, the last minute, rushed, takked on feel to the finale.

I feel like it really suffered from proper "Moonlighting Syndrome", as they got the couple together and then almost immediately didn't want to do anything with that, separating them a bunch, etc. I think shows like Psych show you can get the couple together and make it work (and even break them back up and get them together again), but neither Moonlighting nor Castle really wanted to do that.

Castle actually wears a number of different costumes in that episode besides Mal Reynolds. Caleb from Buffy, Captain Hammer, Edgar Allen Poe (Castle changed his middle name to Edgar.) Those are the ones I can remember. There may be others.

I liked the whole thing, until the disaster of Season 8. Well, I don't remember the whole season, but at least the end was a total disaster—I think I remember reading that negotiations with Fillion to stay on fell through.

The chemistry between the lead actor and actress lifted the show, the quality dropped noticeable after they started to hate each other IRL.

The previous commenters are talking about firefly. But castle ended because stana katic (beckett) made allegations fillion behaved inappropriately around s6 or 7. You can see it in the show as castle has vanished for a bit and when he returns he becomes a pi. Screentime between the 2 characters is very limited and angles give way for body doubles to be used. Contracts ended after s8 and it was decided to renew fillion and not katic (and the actress for lanie) as fillion had the titular role(1/2)

There was big backlash from the fans for that decision and really late into airing s8 it was decided to cancel the show alltogether. The final scene, with 3 little caskett children running around despite castle and beckett being shot and heavily wounded in their home in the precious scene, was filmed in a hurry to end the storyline.
