I mean for them, clean, good cuts are what they're graded on. Bad, rough cuts mean lack of skill. Obviously I'd hope for a good clean cut to reattach myself later (or lessen my suffering).

I don't know much about swordsmanship, but I do know The Wheel of Time series had a lot of named sword moves and stances. Skilled swordsmen knew those moves by name and when to use them.
