They weren't hunted to extinction as they tasted really bad. The Dutch who discovered them actually named them "walgvogel" (bird of disgust). They had no natural predators on the island and no need to fly so their wings evolved away and they made their nests on the ground. The Dutch then introduced pigs on the island to multiply so passing ship's crews could shoot pigs for provisioning. The pigs ate everything they could get and that incuded the dodo's eggs, thus causing their demise.

The Portuguese were there ninety years before so I'm sure they had seen them. Even the name dodo sounds enough like doido (crazy). The Dutch just followed the Portuguese around and didn't discover anything.

This. People said they tasted extremely bad. I assume rodents brought on ships also ravaged their nests on the ground much like flightless birds on new Zealand when explores came
