I always thought it was odd that I didn't notice a single interaction between these two characters that would indicate any sort of romantic relationship until the very last scene of the show.

There was a bit of it, but the scheduling/threat of cancelation really screwed up any chance for sustained relationship building. Really seemed weird to me, too.

They were growing emotionally close in the final few seasons but they had to avoid open depictions and indications of romance because Nick were being utter shit to the show ever since Season 1.

It didn't really start moving that way until Season 3, and was very understated then. In 4 it was clearer, but still a lot of subtext. The sense I get (I haven't looked into it, I'm sure there are many detailed accounts available) is that the decision to move them that way happened maybe as Season 3 was being scripted, and Nickelodeon was either not on board or they were worried they wouldn't be. Then, the show being cancelled after Season 4 meant that they had no time to really develop it.

Lol come on. There had already been on screen kissing in gay relationships in multiple shows at this point, this was about as vague as possible, to give it plausible deniability. They mostly looked like they were giving each other courage/reassurance as they stepped into the unknown.

legend of korra but repaced so it knows there will be a full four seasons but every time korra and asami have a scene together they are slightly more disheveled afterwards with mako getting angrier and angrier till the breakup. bolin still kind/stupid with no idea what's going on, but he's very excited for it.

Its really weird that the community generally depicts mako as some jealous homophobe or something when the reality was, while he liked korra and Asami both. He accepted that the relationships didn't work out and they were happier together than either one was with him
