Just a post to make a point in a comment. Still. Impressive building, the Trib building. Check it out if you’re in Chicago. In 2011, they were a great host to a conference I participated in.

Oh, I’m in awe…just not for the reasons I would hope for.
Filanwizard
Hence why people like Trump hate the media and love Russia where the president can mute the press at will.
DreamDancer2018
Today, people live in fear of the "share" & "like".

paklexx
Problem is press isn’t free

Dont govern, dilemma solved.

We dont have a free press, they arent forced to lie, they are paid to lie.

"Error of opinion may be tolerated where reason is left free to combat it." Thomas Jefferson
CandidGamera
Too bad America always finds the worst possible interpretation of "free" and is fine with a consolidated corporate press pushing propaganda.

I heard earlier in life lord macaulay was famous for fending off his home from two thieves.

I heard it was bandits, not thieves.

I heard they were all wet.

I hear they got a bit sticky once they dried out

I live in Alabama and am in constant awe (not in a good way) of the opinions of the citizens who live around me.

When everyone gets thier news for free, how do reporters make money?
PeterTried
Nice.

If you get something for free, you're more than likely the product.

NPR is pretty fucking great not gonna lie

I can’t remember her name, but she was reporting during the insurrection. I was amazed at her courage. She deserves a Pulitzer.
Ezralite
Meghna Chakravarti has a real bad habit of letting right-wing politicians spew lies unchecked on her show.
KingXizor
Indeed, i donate to my local station every month. A couple bucks is all it takes. Free fact reporting with no bias is what we need.
BBQatCirces
IMO, that's one of the reasons so many news outlets have gone to shit. People refuse to pay for subscriptions, so news agencies rely more 1/
PeterTried
Thankfully, the situation is quite different at my media company. We’re not hunting for clicks but for subscriptions. Paywalls and analysis.
BBQatCirces
Love to hear it. Keep up the fight!
ruferto
there's no reason to pay for subscriptions when you have 5 other sources to get the news and you're not sure if paywalled content is good
gaidinbdj
Yep. Plus, people who do have a subscription do shit like take screenshots or copy/paste the whole article into imgur posts. And you...
gaidinbdj
...will get downvoted to disappearance if you call them out on it. Same with people telling others how to circumvent paywalls.
BBQatCirces
heavily on corporate sponsorship/ad sales. The goal is no longer to increase subscriptions, it's to increase clicks. Anger and fear make 2/
BBQatCirces
people come back with their clicks time and time again. 3/3
AxelBeingCivil
I dunno if that logic follows, though. The entire career of William Randolph Hearst was one long march of sensationalism.
palmo
But he made money by selling his shit by being sensationalist. Currently the shit like Newscorp or brietbart are free to read with tons of(1

Worked in this building for years. Now it’s condos. Don’t even know if you’re allowed in the lobby anymore, but it sure was impressive.

Really? No newsroom here anymore? Wow. So sorry to hear that. What kind of job did you have there?
johnnyoctober
I was a journalist! And they do have a newsroom, in the printing plant in nowheresville west of River North. But most have worked from home
johnnyoctober
They also had an office in another downtown building after they left the tower, but then the pandemic happened.
PeterTried
That’s sad to hear. Makes the memories of the 2011 visit even more precious. I can make a post with more pics if you like.
johnnyoctober
I would love to see that! I may even have some old photos somewhere stored. It was such a grand, beautiful building. Still is in many ways.
