We had one of these at work, the instantaneous current in the cables is so high that if they're loose on the floor they will jump away from each other when you fire it.
Smaller versions along with weld nuts are commonly used on car body panels. I worked as a quality technician doing goods-in inspection on batches of weld fasteners (among many other items). One of the customers for them was Stadco and they make parts many different car brands.
If done right, they're full penetration all the way through, it would actually be a stronger weld than doing it by hand. When you pull the trigger and the arc strikes, the gun has a mechanism that quickly pulls the stud back about 1/4 inch off the base metal and slams it back down near instantly while the tip of the stud and base metal are both molten, resulting in total fusion through the entire tip of the stud. capacitor discharge, there's a tiny little pokie bit on the bottom of the stud that gets vaporized and induces an arc (so plasma there I guess) which melts the base material and the stud, and when the arc is done (I assume an electromagnet in the gun releases) then the spring in the gun smushes the 2 together. The ceramic piece makes the weld fillet between the two nice and even, and shields the arc while it happens..
Yep plasma - they need a huge energy dump unless its like low temp solder , which to give a good base to a bolt wont be this stuff. Increased melting point means you need more energy. Que the arc. Interesting, thanks !
But the guns I have seen (in videos) don’t appear to have guides. As someone who use to have to ensure beams and bolts were in the right place, with bolts perpendicular to the flange/ web, this system does not seem to work very well. I must be missing something.

It looks to be more common with higher diameter studs. The ferrule contains the weld pool and is then destroyed/discarded.
