I remember here in Coeur D Alene, ID one of our mega pastors was on air during COVID, yelling it was a hoax, faith in Jesus would heal you, Fauci was a terrorist, etc.
The minute that fucker couldn't stop coughing we checked into the hospital, was soon on ICU, in a ventilator, and unfortunately survived. The minute he got out he was back to thanking his faith Jesus, saying masks were a plot to destroy the USA, etc.

When these people were informed that they were going to need to be intubated - and that it was quite likely that they were not going to survive even with the tube - it was not uncommon for some of their last words to be a request for the vaccine.

When I told my dad we were having a baby girl he cried with happiness. Two years later he still hadn't met her because his girlfriend refused to let him get the COVID shot.
He finally got it, and has flown here to meet her a few times, but he won't get the booster. And now he can't fly because of complications from shingles, because he didn't get that vaccination either.

My parents were in their late 70's when covid hit - they both took the vax as soon as it was available. They were around when polio was a thing and "they" didn't ask - they came to the schools, and everyone got the shot, fuck your feelings. They remember what it meant to have something that could save you, so no argument. You cannot argue against that without also implying he is weak, (immune system and generally). I think you see overlap with MAGA because they are also tying their beliefs into their ego. Long before covid my nephew died of the flu. He had gotten the flu shot that year. My mom, his grandma, got angry and didn't get the flu shot for years. She was a nurse. She knew the stats on effectiveness. She knew he would have died with or without the shot and possibly faster without it. It wasn't until her hospital started requiring it of nurses that she got it again. I still don't understand her logic. Why blame the shot? It tried.

healthcare workers are a mixed bag. sure, they SHOULD know better, but some nurses are dumb, some doctors are dumb, some pharmacists are dumb, etc. sometimes they're smart overall but dumb about certain things. sometimes they're really smart about some things and dumb about others. sometimes the smart parts makes them oblivious to their own dumb parts. i don't think anyone can be smart about everything all the time

Vaccines don't fight the virus. They teach your immune system how recognize the enemy so your immune system can fight it.

Used to be we killed the enemy virus and showed his dead body to the immune system so they could recognize it next time. Sometimes we needed a live enemy but weakened to a safe level to do the job. That was a bit more dangerous as the enemy was still alive.

The immune system is strong yes. But it will not fight a virus it does not know is a problem until it becomes a problem. At that point you started the fight late.
A vaccine lets you fight it as soon as it shows up, before it gets a chance to build its numbers in your body. Vaccines don't fight. They just show your body what to fight to give you that very important head start.

A big part of the problem is that vaccines have been _too_ effective. The vast majority of people have no concept of how fragile life used to be. The "you're not stronger than a virus" doesn't land because they didn't live through a time when 25% of people didn't even survive childhood. They think they're safe from serious disease without actually understanding why.

I got my COVID vaccine as soon as it was available from the VA, my wife also a vet. refused to get hers but thankfully she agreed to let our kids choose for themselves and they chose to be vaccinated. She had COVID at least 4 times, I got it once, and the kids didn't get sick at all.

The issue is, vaccines work so not a lot of people have actually witnessed what life was like before that. So we get mass amounts of misinformation about how they don't work because they're not actively eradicating anything. They're doing their job perfectly, so we never have to see it.

We all have the same resources (mostly, I know there's socioeconomic disparities). It didn't take my SIL ending up on oxygen (She did cause she was "my immune system is strong" stupid) to know vaccines work. And we have experts informing us as well.
The issue is, some people are just fucking dumb and others are manipulative. And these same people remain dumb in the face of experience.

Even worse, vaccines work amazingly well, but you need to understand some pretty subtle statistics to really appreciate this fully. Some vaccinated people will get ill and die, and many unvaccinated people don't get ill, or get ill and survive. That's the anecdotal evidence people see in their immediate surroundings.
