Depends on your life, but the metaphor doesn't hold up well.

Eventually you try to pull the crooked ones and throw them out, but they still damage the wood going in as well as getting pulled out, sometimes irreparable.
Better to get quality nails to start with and work them appropriately (with training/practice). You'll still get the occasional crooked one, but far less frequent and not as damaging.
Same with life and politics

It doesn't happen all the time though. Maybe, he should have said, sometimes, the crooked go unpunished while straight are constantly hammered.

Poor analogy. Crooked nails ruin the piece and are discarded by any sane woodworker, while the straight ones contribute to a solid and sturdy finished product.
