I feel like a good sign we don't control the weather is a certain golf course isn't getting hit by a tornado on an hourly basis

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I ordered some big Sharpies on Prime day, gonna send some more hurricanes to red states.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

In the conservative might democrats are both incompetent but also extremely crafty/devious and able to change the weather at will. If you’re a right winger, it doesn’t have to make sense.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If the Dems could control the weather Trump wouldnt play golf anyday soon.. and vance would wear a tinfolihat and a grounding rod up his ass..

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Guys I missed the meeting who are we hitting with hurricanes next?

If the liberals were controlling the weather wouldn't the Jews make it less humid in Florida??/s

Core tenet of fascist propaganda is that the enemy is both strong enough to be an existential threat and weak enough to laugh at. And as their voterbase are fucking stupid, it works.

I genuinely feel like the fact something like "The Democrats are controlling the weather!" is getting literal traction as a narrative is evidence that COVID-19 fundamentally alters brain chemistry in individuals. Like even at the height of the Neocons power in the Aughts, Conservatives were never this slack jawed and drooling.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's simpler than that. It's lead poisoning.
Conservatives have always been primed for bullshit, the familiar talking points go back millennia, but lead supercharges their facility for doublethink.

Common symptoms include anger management issues, recall issues, problems with abstract thought, and feelings of persecution and paranoia.

And wouldn't you know it? There's quite the overlap between areas high in lead and areas high in conservatives. Gee, what a mystery.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

They'll believe it while it suits their project, and then go on to believing something else 10 minutes later, maybe even something mutually exclusive. This is Doublethink. It's motivated reasoning. There's not much to 'do' about it other than recognize you're in a struggle with these shit heads and act so that their access to power is minimalized.

I had a really good friend and one evening over drinks she spouts “the Obamas are pedos” and it just went fucking downhill from there. Bill Gates is chipping everyone with the vaccine, all the crazy GQP conspiracies. I would never have guessed that she would be someone that would buy into the bs.

"A sobering truth. Blurred lines between misinformation and belief often signal deeper psychological issues. Empathy and facts are key."

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I've become increasingly convinced that conservatism has no merits at all and is just for those who never left the proverbial crib and want to make it everyone else's problem they no longer have their baba. Anything requiring more maturity of mind and capacity for reason than a typical 5 year old would face demands an immediate tantrum because mentally they still shit their pants and expect someone else to change it for them. Fox "News" is their fucking night light.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

It has a lot of merits if you have millions of dollars and want even more, and don't care about stepping over the bodies of everyone else. Thenp it's great. Or if you're a raging racist, or are addicted to spray tanning.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I would argue that this latest brain rotted, conspiracy obsessed right wing lunacy has very little to do with actual conservatism. They are just straight up proudly ignorant, racist, tinfoil hat wearing idiots. In theory conservatism should exist to make sure that new ideas that come along and are implemented are actually good ideas, not just change for the sake of it. Fiscal conservatism is also a real thing, but the current right wing don’t seem to even know how the economy works

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Going on 40 years old American, I've yet to encounter hardly one single so-called conservative of note, power, or influence that lived during my entire lifetime that wasn't in the end a raging hypocrite, braindead fuck weasel, dangerous theocrat, a stooge for anti-labor plutocrats, or a mix thereof. Even fiscal conservatism never seemed to be real, it's just "line go up" perpetual growth capitalism which is demonstrably unsustainable.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'm not making this up. A few days ago? I commented I was worried because someone i thought was smart was voting Trump. Just found out someone believes the weather is being controlled. I don't know if they are voting Trump, but not sure I need to ask. I'm really worried. Polling data is turning bad for Harris. And while all antecdotal, there's just way too many warning signs I'm seeing. Everyone start mentally preparing yourself for the possibility he's going to win.

Polling data is just as manipulated as the media continuing to support him. Recognize polls as propaganda, not facts, Ignore them and vote.

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 3

I've heard that Republicans where doing a blitz on polling to try and statically burry all the early ones that showed Harris as polling strongly. Remember polls don't vote and most smart people don't respond to polls. Vote and call the GOP out on their BS.

2 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 0

Where did you hear this?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 4

By "all the signs" do you mean losing literally everything since 2016?

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

No, the polling. 2016 polling said Trump would lose. He won. The 2018 polling said Dems would win the house. They won. 2020 polling said Trump would lose, that happened. 2022 polling said GOP would win house, they won. People are so fixated on 2016 to totally disregard polling, even though it's been right much more than it was wrong. Polling is typically pretty spot on for down ballot races. It's national races it can struggle with, but it got that right 4 out of the last 5 elections.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

remember that the polls are also run by corporations who universally lean to the right, so getting out and casting your vote is your weapon!

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

How do you explain the polls underestimating Trumps support in 2016 and 2020? What was the corporations and universities goals in doing that?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Open your eyes and go see for yourself how every outlet treats the GOP as if their vitriol was something to consider. "Here we have insane nutjob, and here we have competent leader, but let's hear what the nutjob has to say." It's like that in every sphere this issue touches. I've never seen bias that big where all results weren't immediately tainted.

And the 'goal'? To get the GOP elected, duh. They literally can't win without cheating, and corps and unis benefit at the expense of society.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I agree with that in some ways. Fox News in particular is horrible for that. I know people on Imgur hate NYT, CNN, and outlets l like that. But I don't. If you actually watch CNN it's typically 5-1/2, with most people on the panel leaning left. Some on Imgur, want us to not listen to any Republican at all. I disagree with that, and think that's not feasible. Even if Harris wins, there's a good chance the GOP holds the house. Biden got some good, and historic bills, with some GOP votes.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Had a friend breakup last week bc I found out he's a trumper. It's not a difference of politics at this point, it's a difference in morals. Sucks too, he's such a bright, happy, smart (I thought) fellow.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Reminder, poles are just a snapshot of a very general demographic of the country and how those feel at that moment. They don't mean that's who wins and many times make people think there's no point in voting.

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Yup. But the polls were right in 2020. And they were right in 2022. For down ballot races, polls are right 80-90% of the time. A national race is just hard to predict because of how diverse we are, and the electoral college.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Tell this smart person that you know that it's not the goverment behind the hurricanes, but rich people looking to get richer

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

If he had the votes then R’s wouldn’t be passing voter suppression laws targeting D’s. He’ll say* he won, then delay certification

2 years ago | Likes 48 Dislikes 2

*lie and say he won, just like he tried to do last time

2 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Lol. You don't think they'd be doing that just in case? I never said it's certain he'll win. It's still a toss up, but it looks like it's leaning him. So I don't think that logic is a good way to measure the state of the race.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 11

The polls said Hilary would win and look what happened. Vote and get everyone you know to vote too. But his plan isn’t to win democratically

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

2 things there. 1 The polls in the week before the election made a big shift towards Trump, after the Comey press conference. 2 the polls in 2016 did underestimate Trumps support. Pollsters adjusted their models to account for that. But, that's still bad, because they did still slightly underestimate Trumps support in 2020. So it being a close race, is bad, because that's in Trumps favor historically with the polls. Harris needs to be up a few points in the polls to win. Not be even, or down.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 14

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Of course we should vote. But even if we vote. He might still win. Just saying to be prepared for that.

2 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 24

If we actually vote he won't

2 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 3

What does "actually vote" mean? Did people not actually vote in 2016 when Trump won? You, and I, and all of Imgur can vote, and Trump could still win.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 13

The downvotes are confusing. It IS very possible that we could all go out and vote and still end up losing bc there might be enough goddamn fools out there that outnumber us. That and all the non-voters that convince themselves that if they don't vote, then they're not complicit or are just too lazy to and end up complaining anyway. It's a valid concern...

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No, way too many did in fact not vote, because they were sure he wouldn't win. If you had a 100% turnout, he would even get a quarter of the vote.

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 2

I understand the anguish behind your words, friend, but let us not give way to fear when hope is still abound. It is true that the "IF" is there. It is equally likely that the other "IF" is also true.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

To give you some hope, here's a post from a couple days ago with lots of anecdotal stories in the comments to the contrary: /gallery/nlkGfr8

2 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 2

Sure. But my biggest reason is the polls. The anecdotes cancel out each other. But it's the anecdotes that remind me about the polls and make me comment.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 8

Polls were heavily in favor of Hillary in 2016. Dems got comfortable and stayed home instead of voting, thinking she'd win by a landslide. There's also a lot of new right-wing polling companies popping up that all favor Trump to boost republican morale and turnout. Don't be fooled.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Sure. But they've been pretty good since 2016. In 2016, yes, they missed Trumps support - so the pollsters adjusted their models and methods. Since then they've been pretty good. Including in 2020. I'm not being fooled, even really smart, Democratic strategists look at polls. I'm just worried Imgur is going to meltdown just because you guys didn't believe the data and are totally surprised if he wins.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

Polls are almost universally done with phone calls to landline numbers... which most of the non-boomers don't even have. Heck, I'm in my 50s and haven't had a landline for years.

The polls that do go to cell phones are ignored because they are not listed contacts.

Ignore the polls. Just vote.

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

That is now false. Pollsters aren't dumb, they know they have to reach people on cell phones. Just because you ignore it, doesny mean no one else answers. I wish people would actually look at how polls are conducted before judging them. It's easy to see the 2020 and 2022 polls were fairly accurate. You guys ignoring them, doesn't make them not true. I hope the polls are wrong. But we'll see. https://www.nytimes.com/article/times-siena-poll-methodology.html

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 6

I think most of us have already accepted the possibility (if nothing else, we all understand that a record amount of absolute bullshit and nonsense are going to be flying around even if they do lose, including trying to scrape things up to the SCOTUS).

That said, it feels like you might need a better group of friends and/or associates to hang out around.

2 years ago | Likes 73 Dislikes 3

Yikes. Staying in a bubble and disassociating with people I disagree with will do nothing to reduce the division in our country. I never said any of these people were my friends. But I don't need an echo chamber. I have zero people blocked on Imgur. I know some people love to do block on Imgur, even still commenting back to a person they've blocked so the other person can't respond. But I don't block anyone. I'll ignore, downvote, or just express why I disagree and try have a conversation. Been

2 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 24

Yes this^ too many people can't have a civil conversation with people they disagree with. Everyone is stuck in thier favorite social media echo chamber. It's a huge part of why everything is so polarized.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

I agree for the most part (and the friends comment was partially in jest), but there's nothing wrong with blocking or disassociating yourself from Bad Actors or the Willfully Ignorant.

I used to agree that I didn't want to block anyone just in case they one day made a good point or had a decent argument, but by definition, Bad Actors and the Willfully Ignorant NEVER engage in that. And no one owes ANYONE their time or attention on social media. No hearts or minds are ever really changed here.

2 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 2

It's better to help actually good people and not trumpers

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Working just fine for me. Maybe it doesn't for other people, and that's fine. But I do fear some of that is people wanting an echo chamber. Which is their right. But I do think echo chambers hurt society as a whole.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 15

Honest question, what, precisely, do I or you gain from staying around people who are willfully ignorant or chose to be assholes to others, such as white supremacists? How is not wanting to be around these people who literally will not change their minds no matter what you say, wanting to be in an "echo chamber?" How would talking to these people, in any way, help me learn or grow as a person?

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

It helps you understand how batshit insane people really can get and to learn to work around the insanity. If we don't know what they're saying, we can't respond for those who are just ignorant of the situations being talked about to educate them in the reality, rather than abandoning them to the idiocracy. The more informed you are, the better a person you can be.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My post wasn't really about the blocking of people on the internet. It was asking for clarification into how not engaging with or avoiding those who are willfully ignorant or blatantly malicious with their "political" views is an echo chamber. The trumpers who see nothing wrong with him, the white supremacists, the "both sides" individuals. I already know how bat shit insane people are and I also know that I can not change them. So why subject myself to that? And how is that an echo chamber?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

On the extreme sure. But I was called a Nazi, then blocked, because I said I didn't support someone's proposal for universal healthcare on Imgur. And someonr just said I was "fellating billionaires" then blocked me because I said their claim about restaurant profits was inaccurate, and provided a source. In both cases, I made it clear I agreed with their overall point, just with the facts they were using. I'm referring to that block abuse thats now rampant on Imgur. Disagree. Block.

That is because people are exhausted. Every day, we try to parse MAGA yokel # 18 from Russian troll farm operator # 327. And sprinkled in between those are the well-meaning idiots who have seen the lines delivered by actors flipping the script, using progressive language to, piecemeal, deliver the foundation for a regressive message, and swallowed it hook, line and sinker.

This, of course, being the ultimate goal of the right's campaign of misinformation and propaganda.
