Lines. I draw in light ink then smudge it with a wet brush.

And this is after. Good way to set down base colors or gentle outlines.

The color balance on this one got a bit jacked

Then hatching over the basetones

Yeah that hatching really brings it together

I'm terrible at backgrounds. I probably should have stopped here, I think the paint spatters might have been too much. Ah well, live and learn.
