I actually dont think chaos is truly the default state of nature. Sure, weather can be chaotic, animals can behave chaotically, and plants grow in chaotic clumps, but weather is mostly calm, animals mostly stick to their instinctual drives, and plants grow where there is good soil, light, and water. A lot of things do happen for a reason, but human shitty behavior is not an excuse for that reason.
You know, I used to think it was awful that life was so unfair. Then I thought, wouldn't it be much worse if life were fair, and all the terrible things that happen to us come because we actually deserve them? So, now I take great comfort in the general hostility and unfairness of the universe.
When I first saw it I wasn't a parent. Now I am. The story of him telling his daughter fucks me up so bad now. Like imagine pretending to be happy all day the day after your wife dies to protect your kid and then being forced to destroy their world by telling them the truth. Fuck.
I was 11 when my father passed in the night. My mom came upstairs and woke me up at 6:30 a.m. to tell me. I ran downstairs crying and screaming and hugged his cold body until the coroner got him. Fun times.
When my sister's husband died, she was at the hospital with him, in another city. My mom was at my sister's house, watching my nephew. My sister called me that morning and asked me to go out to her city, get her son (and my mom), and drive them to where she was at the hospital. But we couldn't tell her son anything because she wanted to break the news. It was awful. The whole 2.5 hours driving there, I'm like, what are we going to say? And then we had to drive 3 hours with him, to where my /1
sister was waiting to tell him his dad was dead. Poor little guy. I can't even imagine how hard it is for he and my sister now. And my sister's depressed and not working and I just don't know what's going to happen to them. /2
I’m sorry about your brother-in-law. I went through a similar thing recently with my sister and her kids. And I know every situation/individual is different, but the best advice I can give is stay involved in your nephew’s life as he grows up and look out for your sister even if she isn’t explicitly asking for help.
My nephew was 7. He is turning 10 this summer and my sister is still depressed and struggling to function. I try to do my best to be present in their lives.
But that's not what the people looking only to profit want. They want to be king. They don't care if it's the king of ashes. They need someone to look down on, to be better than. To so many, success means nothing if it's unaccompanied by the envy of your peers. In the absence of a Little Match Girl, they will create one just to make sure there's a hierarchy.
I had a very cool manager once that looked and talked just like Patton. I came into work one day and there was an emergency meeting. It turns out he had a random heart attack while mowing his lawn and died in his 40s. Terrible things happen all the time for no reason, don't forget to enjoy your life.
One cannot adequately explain the nature of life. Those that claim to know, absolutely, are trying to take something from you. Those that attempt to explain it sincerely are called artists.
"A chaos where the cells that live procreate and the ones that die do not and this somehow forms multiple interacting societies of sentient cells" I don't want anything thanks
She worked at a marketing agency and he was a client. He didn’t give them any time or dates for his shows, told them to “find it on the internet.” So they did, and when they got a date wrong he screamed at everyone.
We are the antithesis of entropy. In a universe that seems to inevitably knock every glass off of every shelf, like a particularly mischievous cat, we humans pick the glasses up, and put them in order. I think the last thing we should do is add to the chaos by knocking the whole shelf down.
I just finished the HBO GSK documentary - I knew Michelle was in it and I knew she died before they caught him, but I was not expecting the doc to focus so much on her and her contributions. It's a touching story and really is worth your time, but note that GSK is just the reference point for a documentary on Michelle McNamara
The thing is, it isn't just no empathy. It is no empathy for this other people. Some of the worst inhumanities happened because this group of people are defined as 'other'. Some of them truly had no empathy, but the majority of defendants didn't think those 'people' are humans.
That's the thing, I suspect that in many cases those that we call immoral think of themselves as moral. The best way I have thought about it is that we generally view morality as the well being of our social group, but who we consider as part of our social group depends on the individual. For some it's all humanity or all life on this planet, for others it's much smaller like race, political ideology, town, family. And for narcissists, it's only themselves. ->
So if we see someone mistreating someone within our social circle, we view them as immoral. But for them, they don't think that they need to be worried about the victim because they're not in their social circle. They're "the other" as you put it. I don't think anybody would consciously think about morality this way, and I doubt many people would agree with me, this is really a musing I once had to potentially explain why people who we might consider monsters think of themselves as good people.
I know what you're trying to say and even though you got "autistic" wrong I will point out that part of what you said is right: inability to feel empathy doesn't make someone evil or bad. A person incapable of feeling empathy can still CHOOSE to be a good person through logical choice; but I think the point is all these pricks ALSO lacked empathy. Like "not all X are Y, but all Y are X" kinda thing.
Same with my son. He doesn't always understand why others feel the way they do, or why he feels the way he does, but he's affectionate and gets upset when others are upset.
Ppl on the spectrum feel emotion, they just have trouble recognizing or communicating it in social interaction. Psychopaths, on the other hand, do not feel when they hear a whimpering animal, see a person in pain, etc. There’s no emotional response in them even when they register a sad/cruel event. Whereas ppl on the spectrum may have trouble identifying/displaying the appropriate emotion for a given circumstance. It’s a disconnect as opposed to an off switch.
Ehhh, that's a popular perception of psychopathy but there IS no agreed definition of it. This is just pedantic but I think it's important to remember b/c people tend to throw the words around a lot, and they can *also* be dehumanizing. Reason being: someone who can't feel empathy can still be a decent person through logic. Like "logically I know what suffering is, I'm not gonna cause it even if I can't feel empathy" sorta thing.
"No. It ain't. When people say things are a lot more complicated than that, they means they’re getting worried that they won’t like the truth. People as things, that’s where it starts."
Psychopath's an overused word with no REAL agreed-upon definition. It's just that we as humans often have this idea that some people are this iredeemable, Biblical-tier evil-at-heart when really, they're just assholes
Not necessarily. It is possible to feel no empathy for, say, children in Gaza, citizens of Ukraine, school shooting victims, elder abuse, or victims of British genocide simply because the person does not know any such people or is not accustomed to thinking about them as such. Such horrors may be facts of the universe in the way that the sun is, or that the Roman Empire was, but they don’t affect the thinker personally, so…they just don’t register. Apathy is not the same as psychopathy.
But empathy doesn't require prior experience, you're thinking of sympathy. I have not been at war, but I feel badly for the people of Ukraine. That's empathy. If you can't feel for someone because you're not personally impacted, then you have no empathy, and are potentially a psychopath, or at least a sociopath.
Thing is, it doesn't take full sociopathy to lack empathy for an individual or group, it just takes seeing them as lesser than you, as less than human. Its why one of the first steps in genocide is to use dehumanizing language, calling people "parasites" or "vermin", you can convince ordinary people to do truly horrific things if they view those they are doing them to as subhuman. One of the hardest things to come to terms with about WW2 is that most of the Nazis weren't psychopaths, just people
