Right wingers have only one interest; ‘owning the libs’, which is also called playing a victim. That’s all they care about. They’re just playground bullies.
And they can’t stand each other without that one shared goal to bind them together. That’s why every one of their shit holes (parlour, truth social, twitter too soon enough) eventually fail. Without people to harass they’ve got literally nothing.
And that’s why they complain when being shut out; they’re being deprived of their only means of entertainment. Imgur is no exception. You see it with right wingers here, yapping and gurning about an echo chamber and downvotes.
Rodenbeard
It's because the right wing BEGS for a chance to play the victim. There's no bottom line where it would be too childish or petty, they'd kick themselves in the balls and cry foul like the spooky WOKE LIBERALS made them do it.

If Imgur is a liberal echo chamber, it's only because reality has a notorious liberal bias.

If I had to choose an echo-chamber, I would prefer the one where everyone wants others to have the right to exist & where cruelty isn't considered a virtue.

They make BlueSky sound almost appealing, despite its tiny population and lack of federation. I'll stick with Fediverse apps for now, but I wish BS all the luck in the world building out their network, even though it's currently vapour.
APackOfExcitedGingers
It's bonkers that conservatives bumble around from site to site, whining about liberal biases, yet never once considering that the reason they constantly find themselves outnumbered is that their ideals and beliefs are objectively terrible. Unsurprisingly zero introspection.
markc22
Yup, also I’m totally stealing “ghoulish goulash “.
Rathan5
Turns out conservatives can’t stand being around each other any more than we can stand being around them, and they hate each other only slightly less than they hate “the libs” (I’m waiting for Boebert and MTG to get into an actual hair pulling face scratching cat fight on the Senate Floor)

mtraiders73
This site isn’t as liberal as some of you think. I see subtle racists comments on here. Was really downvoted about a post on Lewis and Clark. I don’t even know or care what the up votes or downvotes are for. The subtle racism I usually see is against Native Americans. This place isn’t as friendly and color blind as most think it is. I guess you have to be a minority or certain minority to notice the subtle racism. JMO.
DarkRedCape
That’s all they want, someone to fight with. It’s why none of the right wing social media platforms ever do well or become popular, because there is no one to argue with.

I think this is really more of a story about extreme entitlement, people thinking that any space not bowing to their needs is an attack. It's basically the first line of the quoted article.
PeaceBaby
Trump made them believe they could be racist, misogynist assholes and still demand respect. It doesn't always work out that way, thankfully.
BythepowerofPlank
maybe they should learn to meme
WardSharlow
In order to do that, they'd need to invent their second joke.
AnalFistingPornstarLegendWolverine
They would first need to learn to relate to others and they wouldn't be conservatives if they could.

Maybe Bluesky (and even sometimes Imgur) can be a liberal echo chamber. Or maybe people of intellect tend to gravitate toward each other, and away from narcissistic neofascists hell-bent on destroying America in the name of Trump, guns, hate, and unaffordable healthcare.
bigfatpanda89
Hence, that's why it's a liberal echo chamber, not a conservative one

Imgur is fun but it's absolutely a liberal echo chamber. When people post misleading facts about Trump you get downvoted for corrections.
Crimesawastin
I left imgur for a while because of the liberal leaning fake news. It was frustrating. Hell, once some racist dog whistle post about South Africa made it to fp. So weird
TheSecondPiewackit
It's also full of right-wing trolls and bots, they just get spotted immediately and downvoted.
haIucid
Sometimes. But we also have lots of cats and memes!
Snooj
Oh, definitely, we have lots of stuff besides that. It's not *only* an echo chamber but that is absolutely one of its primary components, especially since 2016.

Hey, Im a conservative christian and Imgur treats me very kindly because im not a bigot or a cultist. In fact, I get downvoted more for liberal skew than I do for my conservative veiwpoints. Imgur hates on the GOP, organized religion, vapid narcissism, cultists, etc. Stuff that's actually terrible. I wouldn't say we're an echo chamber, it's more of a reactive meme retaining pool than a chamber. The shit just floats off the way usersub works (USERSUB NEWEST FOR LIFE!)
Boygirlcatparty
Uh huh. Okay
depressedscientist
I would say all social sites are echo chambers. Even Imgur has it. What keeps the echo chamber from resonating itself into implosion is different views not being pushed out by any means. Normally, if an opposing view persists alone, they gradually refine their output to get less blow back. And maybe eventually see the other perspectives directly. But that’s because relocation is not simple in life. Online however, you can just bail and find something else that will reinforce your bias.
SilicaGelPacket
As a progressive, I think imgur is capable of handling that sort of thing pretty well, but we definitely have our share of moral purists. It depends more on the mood and the phrasing than the actual content of the comment.
HUGHgReaction
You probably get treated well because you don't make a-hole posts/comments (haven't looked though). People can disagree with me and I'm fine with that, what I don't like is the name calling and insults that seem more common on the right than the left. Both sides do it but, to me, it seems to be far worse on the right. It has got teal bad since Trump was given a voice and he is terrible for it.
keys79
Likewise, although I’d say my views are much more progressive nowadays than my conservative upbringing. But I think most of the things we look down on here have little to do with actual politics or the teachings of Jesus, and more to do with people distorting those things to fit their own hateful agenda. Politics should be about public policies that benefit all of us. And Jesus was all about loving and helping the marginalized. MAGAts and Evangelicals have distorted both to be self serving.
varyael
Conservatives can be progressive! That's the neat part. I certainly am. I think Roosevelt and Nixon with their conservation shit and Obama with medicare expansion were very smart. They used what was existing and made it better. That's conservative, but they modified shit in such a way that it helped in insanely big ways, the EPA has been gutted since, poor Nixon, huh? Roosevelt expanded our parks but again, so much has been sold, poor Roosevelt
varyael
But Roosevelt was a megolomaniac, Nixon was batshit. I like Obama. Good conservative guy. Funny he ran as this huge liberal when he was obviously more conservative than GW!
Kitehammer

I'm a norwegian liberal. I've been downvoted and called a cave man conservative on imgur. Mostly for saying things like: men and women are different
varyael
In general, people are different. The variations are too numerous to categorize effectively, buy downvoting for someone making personal observations is a weird behavior I've noticed widely on imgur, especially when people of other cultures get involved in the conversations

God isn't necessary in my mind to think about what a guy 2000 years ago faced when he insisted rich dogmatic hypocrites aren't holy. Good people who feed the poor, heal the sick, and help the needy are the ones who are "righteous" is the message he lived and spread. Religion deified him to knock that message down and use him to continue controlling people. I do believe in a universal creative godlike thing, but it isn't like anything I've found in religious teachings
amipretty
Are you really a conservative christian? Why call yourself that when nothing you have said here sounds like it's coming from a conservative christian? Almost sounds like you're trying to be edgy. No offence. And, wouldn't you be more happy around other conservative christians? Imgur isn't left leaning anyway, more like center right. Which is why I ask. I would like to see Imgur go full left. Down with the man! a little s/ there. Peace, I mean no harm.
varyael
I'm a very conservative christian, I'm just not an asshole. Regressives are not conservatives. Most Republicans are not conservatives, they're regressives/fascists. People equate political parties to political beliefs. A conservative wants stuff in place to work well, slow progress. A liberal wants to try new shit and sometimes that costs money (which conservatives SHOULD be saving by streamlining). That is not how the US government works, ergo, I'm not a Republican. Our system is broken badly
potshot
Imgur is liberal leaning, but for more important than political position is the bandwagon effect: I've gotten up-voted and down-voted for the very same sentiment in different comments, depending entirely on whether the first few votes were against or for.
varyael
Maybe as a savvy Usersubber(?) I've learned how to comment farm enough to avoid this is most cases. I have a BUNCH of conversation started trophies because of the engagement I get with people who dont hold the same viewpoints. Most times it's all very respectful (if your argument isn't based on bullshit)
potshot
Yeah, most of the time it fosters polite discussion. But I've seen it go both ways.
Thesaya
Imgur might be considered a liberal echo chamber by American standards, but as a pretty far left leaning Swede, I consider it running between right of centre to the left, and definitely not to the far left. If you go by a more international scale, imgur has quite a broad political spectrum, there's just very few far right people.
Emjayen
You know it's bad when "Okay I suppose black people and gays *are* human afterall" is what Americans consider 'left'. Ofcourse even then, as soon as you get to topics that require some consistency or conflict with their feelings (you know, like *women*, which inevitably brings out the incel/MRA-adjacents), Imgurians, broadly, fail spectacularly.
varyael
Good GOD did you see the HP game thing? I sat there like... wow
Emjayen
Yep. I also remember the Amber Heard fiasco; the endless amount of spittling vitriol as users clung to what they felt was some sort of bitter vindication was utterly pitiful, and rather disturbing.
varyael
Yes, another good example. Most recently the migrant ship v sub thing. People get loud on stuff, sometimes goes sideways
Snooj
I love this place but it's absolutely an echo chamber. How many times does a picture of Trump with a caption "Jail Now!" get to the FP?
LostCaterpillar
I think there's nuance in that Imgur is definitely an echo chamber but it's not an echo chamber on strictly political lines. You really see in in some of the contradictory orthodoxies here, such as the complaining about the excessive punishments handed out by the US criminal injustice system but when white people do get more proportional sentences you'll be downvoted into oblivion for say "everyone should get this level of punishment" and instead it's all "they should get the black treatment."
LostCaterpillar
That is to say that while there's very much an echo chamber that chamber doesn't have a singular political stance. When discussing certain groups of people or situations it favors restorative justice but in others it has a vindictive (read: conservative) streak demanding the harshest of retributive justice.
Thesaya
Yep, got downvoted a while ago for saying that 12 years was plenty of time for the crime commited by a jan 6 insurrectionist, also almost always get downvoted when I speak out against the death penalty, even in heinous cases.
SomeSorcerer
Well see, here’s the thing. He deserves to go to jail because of the crimes. The only other option is he’s above the law. A view held by cultists. I fail to see how adding that insane take to the dialogue would somehow make Imgur less of an “echo chamber” and more “legitimate” the half way point between sanity and insanity is still insanity.
Snooj
Because that sentiment gets to the FP a lot with no content, additional information, or value.
Jarjarthejedi
"A fact makes it to the front page without any value" does not inherently make a place an echo chamber. If someone posts a picture of, say, the Evergreen stuck with no caption, and it makes it to the FP, that doesn't mean that place is an "echo chamber for anti-consumerist beliefs!" or whatever, it means enough people agree with the /fact/ that it made it to the FP. :/
Snooj
Except that never happened. A picture of the Evergreen with the caption "The boat is stuck" never made it to the FP. But fan art, memes, dumps, posts with a writeup of why it couldn't be pushed, the little excavator that could, those all made it. Things with value.
