They also always find out out quickly their sign on bonus dwindles away: Buy own gear because issued gear is crap, take a private first aid course, get your gear stolen by officer, buy crappy soviet gear from same guy, pay another officer for a cushy position in the rear, get sent to the zero line, bribe next officer to at least get a gun for the assault... Then get blown up three weeks after signing on, while assaulting a fortified position riding a motorbike through wide open fields.

And if you think recruiting people under false pretenses to fill out front line combat roles is some uniquely Russian thing, have you ever *met* a military recruiter? For any army? US military recruiters will gladly lie to get warm bodies. And Ukrainians are getting conscripted, meaning the recruiter doesn't even have to bother lying about getting a cushy backline drone pilot job before sending them off to hold the front.

I wouldn't be so sure. I hate the war, and Putin but as someone who has spent a lot of time in Russia (including teaching in rural villages in Siberia) the propaganda machine is vast & deep. Many of them are only aware of what they've been shown on state sponsored media.
Don't get me wrong, there are terrible Russian people willingly and enjoyingly doing heinous things during the entirety of this illegal war, but there are also poorly educated, naive rural folk systematically sent to slaughter
