I operate on the idea that everyone gets a basic level of respect from me, it raises or lowers depending on situation. The worse you behave, the less respect you get from me, the better you behave, the more you get. There's also a degree to pre-baked respect depending on position, but that can go away if you don't behave like the position would implicitly assume you can, would and will behave.
Respect, as an authority, is EARNED, not given freely. You do NOT need to respect police, government, teachers, elders, even your own parents, if they are not worthy of that respect. You can treat them as a person without showing them respect.
I always hated this stupid ideology of someone in a position of authority has to be given respect. Why? It's outdated and has no place. Just because someone has a high position they automatically need to be given respect? Fuck that bullshit. The only respect that makes sense, is respect of privacy, boundaries, and accepting "no" without fuss. Anything is else is just wanting "authority" over people.
"Respect" for people in authority is obeisance and fear, but giving people who work inherently dangerous or significantly undesirable jobs, especially if for the public good, a modicum more respect as part of their job wouldn't necessarily be uncalled for. Someone starting out as a teacher or firefighter ought to see a higher amount of baseline "for the position" respect than a new CEO, for example. What they do with that is up to them, and you're not obligated to respect a douche bag teacher.

I mean it by treating my doggo as a friend.

I disagree, I work for a state government, authority doesn't deserve respect.

Respect is given. It's only ever "earned" once it's been lost and someone wants to earn it back.

I think the issue is that many people confuse respect with obedience. I can respect authority but I'm not always going to obey them.

That was way better without that shitty photos... And with the OP name on it.

Because the police will beat and kill you if you don't. Particularly if you are male.
