I started a fire with a friction spindle once at scout camp as part of a wilderness survival course. That’s why I always carry a lighter.

#1 peeling the loose, flaky bits of birch bark is fine and does not hurt the tree. Don't go out of your way cutting entire swaths of bark

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

off white birch in the fall or winter, though. I'm fortunate to have river birch in my area, which just peels off like an old sunburn.

"Citronella is a myth because it only starts repelling mosquitos after 3-10 minutes" Uh.. Doesn't that mean it still works..?

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Maybe true in 2013.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thanks for the "must see star gazing events 2013", that's so useful, I'll keep it for the next time 2013 comes round.

If only I had a Delorean......and a flux capacitor

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Tried that. The power requirements are nuts.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's a fair cop

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You forgot “Ryan” as a fire starter in #1

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Who knew a lighter can start a fire....

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Would have put Drew Barrymore but couldn't find one

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Came down to the comments immediately from #1 for this. The most important firestarter.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I came to the comments just to see this. Thank you and take your upvote

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Doing my part!

#1 plasma lighter + solar power bank (waterproof).

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I feel like covering myself with catnip might repel mosquitoes, but would involve significant other risks.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I feel like if you've got a favorite brand of strike anywhere matches, you've really got your shit together

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As a survival instructor, I approve ?

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Favorite and forget.

I know from being in jail that you can light a smoke by touching some wires together in the back of the TV

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Those datashits are very incomplete and totally useless if you don't practice what you read.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

During bear encounter leave phone for it? Like should i unlock it so it can play a game?

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Brown recluse bite can cause some very serious complications, seek medical assistance.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Did you even read these before you copied and pasted them!? Stargazing for 2013!? Really?

7 years ago | Likes 64 Dislikes 3

Little by little I have been saving these in a folder on my computer. I thought I would share. That one slipped by my 6 sigma like review.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Also posted a blatant ad for mosquito magnets as an infographic.

7 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

REI plugged their stormproof matches too

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

REI pays my mortgage

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Do they really? I used to work for Dick’s and still give their local waterways sheet to my kayaking friends.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No I was just being sarcastic ;)

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I got paid by the mosquito magnet people in advance

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yes i needed the star gazing event guide for 2013

7 years ago | Likes 428 Dislikes 3

Thanks @OP, appreciate it - FYI: you don't need to put a captions after every pic any more - imgur now puts ads on the bottom

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The more you know.... Thank you

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just leave it aside until the next 2013

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I learned about a comet named ISON for NO REASON! Thanks!

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Now I know when to time travel to. Thanks, OP

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Personally very excited for December 13 2013

7 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

@op is a time traveler. Be kind, they're easily confused.

John Titor came back?

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Different world line - in this one, he hasn’t been here before

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Its about time!

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Oops how did that get in there?

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I am still happy it’s there man.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Picaridin instead of nasty smelling DEET

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I've found over years and years of backpacking that one should pack food that you like. Nutrition is worthless if it comes home with you.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I used a nalgene bottle filled with hot water at the foot of my sleeping bag and I'd never slept so well camping.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Will definitely use that sometime

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Come on one of my survival camping vacations in the amazon jungle. You'll be well fed and learn how to do this with a machete. Not kidding.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

My parents had a friend who kayaked from high on the Madeira to the main Amazon back in the 70s, he had some tales to tell...

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Do a post!

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

#6 Grizzly Bears can climb trees. Not as good at it as Black Bears, but they're more likely to catch you before you make it to a tree.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Also don’t play dead if a bear mauls you! Fight back. Don’t let any predator just munch on you.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yup. Always stand your ground. Preferably, don't get into contact with them. Make lots of noise so they know where you are & leave you alone

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Do not wear cotton socks under wool socks. Wool is moisture wicking, cotton is not. Your feet will sweat & absorb in the cotton. = cold feet

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Yeah...I’m calling BS to not going to emergency room for brown recluse bite. Look up the aftermath and tell me you wouldn’t go in right away

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

The vast majority of recluse bites are harmless (and hence never reported). I've gotten bit twice that I know of, just an itchy red bump.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ive been bitten by a brown recluse. Er def, I had an allergic reaction AND it turned necrotic. I was in MI at the time, super rare there.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Why not strip bark from living birch trees? Is it just a dick move or is it toxic or some shit?

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

If you take a ring of bark off the tree the tree will die

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's just a dick move in tree culture. Strip them from protection. If someone ripped your skin off, you'd be like "Hey ! I needed that !"

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It damages the trees. It's more responsible to use existing dead fall unless you're in a dire situation.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ok that's what I thought. The wording was just hella weird, so I wasn't sure if it was something more dire.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Carry a knife in case of cougar.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Doesn't you have condoms for that?

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Last time one had it's eyes on me I just told her I was married.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Carry a knife. Just carry a knife. Thats some of the best advice I can give a person.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Unfortunately, that has gone out of the culture for some reason. I think it started with knives being banned from schools, and it was ...

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

... normalized as people grew up.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yea, maybe, its a great tool to have handy. I mean I almost never have to stab someone but I have opened many boxes. Lol

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

#1 you forgot dryer lint. That shit is dangerous. I put that in egg cartoons. Almost instant fire. Source: I was a pyro Boy Scout

7 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

It has dryer lint as one of the options on the egg carton one. In #1

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Ah you got me. Didn't read the fine print until after I posted.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I do agree with you though. I keep dryer lint in my "fire bag" along with char cloth and other things. Never know when you'll need it.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I use dryer lint and cotton balls inside cardboard TP tubes, filled with wax, for water-proof tinder sources. I cut them into pucks and

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

fluff up one side to turn into a sort of candle.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

He also forgot pine sap/knot/cones which is similar to the birch one except pine is a lot more common where I live.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It’s in there, in the egg cartons, my go to starter

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Dryer lint is typically mostly cotton material, which is already very flammable, fluffed up so it allows oxygen to flow easily. It's called

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

a flash tinder because it burns fast. It's meant to bring ignition from a small source such as a spark to a flame to further light kindling

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Some modern fabrics are treated with fire retardants, so this is not always as useful anymore

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If you have any amount of cotton clothing in the dryer, it's good enough.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Trust me, Only took 1 to lite this Saturday. I practically had to throw it in it lit so fast.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You already had accelerant down, the lit dryer lint only provided an ignition source.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Is it okay to use in a fireplace, or should it be reserved only for outdoor fires?

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's tinder to get the fire started, so only a small amount is ever needed if you have proper kindling prepped. I typically use a golf-ball

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

sized amount paired with wood shavings/curls or birch bark. I also make wax pucks filled with lint and cotton balls to carry on the trail.
