There was a crazy amount of euphemisms in the mid 20th century to describe someone as a gay man without saying it outright. "Light in the loafers", "friend of Dorothy", "dotes on his mother", "confirmed bachelor", "flamboyant", "likes to play 'Drop the Handkerchief'", the list goes on and on.

Similar to the reason historians used euphemisms so much. Sure, sometimes they may literally not have understood that someone was homosexual, but a lot of the time they just didn't want their research defunded, or all of their sources confiscated and destroyed. How many homosexuals do we know about from 500 or more years ago that we only know about know because the historians described them in those euphemisms that kept their work from getting destroyed?

And then you have the Romans, who would dis a guy in verse for having "wintry breath" from enjoying "too many icicles." These were not euphemisms, but metaphor, Latin had totally different words for the way buttocks would flutter while receiving an*l depending on which gender you were talking about. And i don't mean a slight change of ending, that's just inflection of the same word
