Lockdown Project

Hi imgur, I am currently in lockdown. Here is how I refreshed our main toilet in our house.

3So this bathroom once had nice hardwood floors, but it now smelt musty, the toilet leaked, it was cold and dark. Also the door you can see open here is our external access door, the door frame was actually spilt and the hinges were busted. It was a feat to even open it.

Found the source of the smell.

The seal was so old it was sealing-no-more. It's okay though, we put a lovely pvc pipe with rubber seal in the hole.

The poor wood, 3 of the screws had rusted so bad they were snapped clean through.

The owners of our house (rental) had obviously noticed this room was drafty. To solve this issue they jammed down 2 towels in the gap where water inevitably pooled. The towel just held the moisture and ruined the floor (and door and door frame).

Poor wood again.

Well. We added a new door frame and used spray foam to fill in the hole. This is not a permanent fix, but the owners would've left the door to stay sealed and would've argued that the toilet in our ensuite meant this room didn't have to be functional.

Now that the floor was level, I bought $30 worth of lino from the hardware store (I have a trade card luckily) and had a go at laying it. Some of my cuts weren't super straight but the new trim hides it well so we can pretend I'm a pro.

We then installed the new seal, and painted the pipe white to give it a fresh look.

Toilet reinstalled. Slightly off kilter so we could install new screws (4 this time, super secure toilet)

The cats approve. This room no longer smells of a mixture between a human litter box and grey water run off.

Total cost with tools approx $200 AUD
Materials (including timber for door frame) about $170 AUD
Our owners made an agreement when we moved in if we were to fix stuff (like gates that should be able to be opened, windows they painted shut etc) they'd go halves. I know this could seem like pouring money into someone else's house, but for $85 I'm just stoked that 'eventually' when we can have guests over again, I won't be afraid to let them see the main toilet. I'm the one who's gotta live here.
