Project Hexayurt Burning Man 2019

I picked this 6' stretch hexayurt off craigslist and it was already in a semi-folding configuration but I wanted to make it fully folding with permanent tape hinges and velcro seams, the goal is to be able to put it up all by myself on playa without fiddling with tape.

So I cut it apart and started taping it my way. I did the roof first which was kinda tricky because the apex has this giant floating hinge to let the ends fold inwards.

Roof folded flat. I covered all filament tape on the outside with foil tape to protect them from sun degradation to make it permanent.

Depending on which way the hinge folds, the filament tape could be on the inside or outside.

After all the hinges have been taped, this is what the yurt looks like when it's collapsed.

Then we gotta do the velcro flaps. Start by sticking both sides on together like so.

Then you use filament tape to make the flap.

Flap is working!

Except flaps are sticky where tape is exposed so dry shampoo is used to un-stickify them

I made smaller flaps to cover the open corners

Flaps are flapped, now you just cover them with foil tape to protect them.

Now we're making the velcro tarp floor. It sticks to the inside in case it rains. The tarp is laid flat and then cut around the edge outside, leaving room for velcro

And then you just stick the tarp to the velcro and trim the excess afterwards.

The purple palace is christened, all set up on playa! Wish I had a vid of me putting it up but it was nighttime when I got in.

View from the door. The memory foam bed on metal frame was also key to my comfort. I look haggard because it's Tuesday and we just completed camp teardown, time to celebrate and take down the purple palace.

I had to fiddle with it a little but it's clear it's easy to do by myself (time lapse 3 minutes)
