Erwitt was documenting Pittsburgh during a period of major redevelopment when he made this photograph. Its strange combination of a huge smile, childhood play and an unsettling gesture made it one of his best-known early images.

As a middle child boy of three boys growing up with cap guns. Playing Russian roulette did occur, with smiles. We all grew up without committing suicide. Not that I'm condoning what happened, but toys be toys and it was not abnormal.

Fast forward a few decades and you have Kordell Stewart fighting rumours of being gay because a white police officer didn't like that the Steelers QB was black. I'm a Steelers fan too and it was gross learning about some of the vile people that are also in your fan base.
