She is awesome! I subscribe to her at https://www.youtube.com/@yujawang7753
I've got 3 of her non-live CD's (ripped in flac) on all my devices, and in my classics playlists. Her live shows never disappoint.

that early-mid part sounds like Eric Carmen's All By Myself.

Following up on that: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Carmen

*Carmen's first two solo singles were chart hits in 1976. Both were built around themes by Sergei Rachmaninoff. The first single, "All by Myself"—based on Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2[12]—was No. 2 in the United States*

Wow. I didn't realize that was the case. I guess my ears are better than I thought.

Fun fact: Eric Carmen got sued by the Rachmaninoff estate and lost for writing All By Myself by just setting lyrics to this.

They also sued him for using another composition as the base for "Never gonna fall in love again", they settled; Rachmaninoff was named as co-writer and the estate got 10% of the royalties.

ehem... if you don't mind. "Who ja wang?" "Yuja Wang"

Mostly non sequitur here:

In law school a professor (truly brilliant legal mind) called on a guy whose last name was Wang. Professor pronounces it as “Wayng.” The student in a heavy Chinese accent corrects him: “is, is Wong”. Later in the class the professor wanted him to answer another question and calls him “chang”. I’m 100% sure it wasn’t intentional, but one helluva misspeak.

I get that she's famous or whatever but why is it like, pianists that get to become famous when they have a whole orchestra full of people doing shit just as difficult backing them up?

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

it's partly a high skill ceiling thing. and it's an expressive instrument. violinists and maybe cellos are the other big soloist instruments. they're also capable of being loud. another part of it is just the list of well known repertoire is in those instruments. But that gets circular

This would be beautiful even without the orchestra.

It's the same thing when a vocal soloist is performing with a piano accompaniment. The piano parts might be balls-to-the-wall overthetop insanely difficult and impressive, but the accompanist's skills are a given, not the point of the performance. They're important, even critical, but the show is not about them. Here, the show is not about the orchestra. Musicians take turns being in the spotlight, and each of those performers in the orchestra probably solo elsewhere.

no but all the instrument celebrities are like piano, you never see flute celebrities, ykwim?

Also Jethro Tull and Lizzo would like a word lol but yeah I do know what you mean. Maybe because piano is like the biggest fucking instrument other than pipe organ, so people who play it automatically get some kind of special celebrity thing by default, especially if they are both talented AND hot. See: my other reply about Franz Lizst.

It goes all the way back to Franz Liszt. He was a hot shot pianist and was pretty much handsome as fuck. It used to be that the piano either faced the orchestra or the audience, but Liszt was like nah. He turned his piano to the side so the audience could see how hot he was while he was banging out the freshest tracks.
Pianists have always had a kind of celebrity thing going on, but Franz Liszt took it to a new level with the side piano thing.
