My sense of taste slowly started coming back first, followed soon by my sense of smell. As soon as my sense of smell came back I was accosted by this phantom odor.
I used to live in the basement of a house where the person living upstairs smoked and the air vents brought the smell down to me. I’ve had that exact smell in my nose for 4 days and I hate it!

I’m assuming it’s from the COVID and not a stroke or something because it’s been 4 days and I haven’t had any other problems like face droop or speech issues. I plan to call my primary doctor tomorrow an hope my insurance will take care of it.

Does anyone else have a story like this?

The symtom is called Parosmia for stuff that smells different and Phantosmia for smelling stuff that's not there.

I experienced those a few years back. What are common causes?

Anything that removes your sense of smell.

Sniff some garlic. See if it stops or changes.

Will you be able to live, laugh, and love after your recovery?

Well I can't smell hardly anything to begin with so I can't help you OP, sorry

Smelling phantom cigarette-smoke can be caused by something as simple as clogged sinuses. I had this at an extreme a year ago.

Sounds like you are about to have a visit from the ghost of Christmas past. The taxi driver from scrooged.

Haha, it’s weird. Having this smell without a source, my mind has wandered to “maybe I died, am being cremated and this is the afterlife...”

That's just the nerve damage in your brain from covid, don't worry it's just like the flu tho.

When I get mad allergies I smell burned hair everywhere.

Not exactly, but as a long time heavy coffee drinker, the smell and taste of coffee made me want to throw up for a month after.

That’s a bummer, I’ve at least been fortunate enough to not have my taste effected by this.

Make sure u don't have a cracked heat exchanger. Mine smelled like a bbq grill and it was really dangerous.

Honestly, this is the first time I saw a silver lining in potentially catching something that could kill me.

Thank you! That’s a very informative article, now I have a name for what’s going on!

In Short: YES, your sense of smell (and maybe taste) might be different now, because the repair of your smelling organs is botched.

Try smoking a cig, then you won't smell it. Just kidding, cigs are bad

I have thought that maybe if I smell actual cigarette smoke it might kick my brain into resetting...

Maybe your neighbors smoking and you just never noticed before

Join the Covid support groups on Facebook, their helpful with this stuff. I smelled tobacco smoke and catbox chemicals for months. 1/2

2/2 can't WebMd, because we ARE the data, hate that part. But the long-haul support groups help. Especially for lingering symptom check ins.

Ps- obviously contact your Dr, I'm an internet stranger, but at least for me there wasn't anything they could do it just had to fade.

Well I’m glad to hear it faded at least! Thanks
