Fun penguin fact: southern hemisphere penguins are named after the true penguin, what we now call the Great Auk (Pinguinus impennis). Even though they are as related as they are to hummingbirds. We just called them penguins, because they looked like northern hemisphere penguins - which of course we hunted to extinction in the mid 1800s.

That's what the 90s FPS protagonist bit in the title is about. Old school Doom sound effect when you take fall damage (might not be Doom specifically but I do recognise the sound from something)

Old person here. There are 3 sounds, all of them are from Doom 1 and 2. The bassy 'UNF' is the sound when pressing 'open' on something that doesn't open, like a wall or locked door. The more human grunt is the sound when Doomguy takes damage. The third punchy sound effect is exactly that- When you punch something.

There's also a "landing" voice clip from Quake in there that plays occasionally.

I took a listen again and you're right, what I mistook for the doomguy damage sound is in fact the quake landing sound.
