I don't think I'll ever understand how mining works. How do you mine numbers and why does it need lots of GPU juice.
thisistheinternetimheretotellliesandarguewithstrangers
I can tell you this much. I don't understand either.
ImaginaryMamboNumber5
Because GPUs have lots and lots of cores that can each do calculations. The mining is solving complex number problems in little chunks.
Not sure why someone decided that was worth something though...
jmbmpt
I wanted someone to briefly and simply explain that, like to a really dumb fucking guy. A friend of mine.
TakeTheStairs
dude go to youtube. its such a huge topic that making it clear 140 at a time will be very hard. visual aides help also.
Lightsmith
Do they need graphics cards for number mining? Genuine question.
sadurdaynight
They're using the gpu's to create massive parallel processing crunchers while the cpu is the workload director.
GPUs are hugely powerful at computational computing
CPUs have 4-12 powerful cores tha can run code, GPUs have 100s-1000s of small cores that can run smaller programs. They were built to make
Calculating the millions of pixels and 3D vectors for uh graphics but are really good at solving math that requires brute force
I thought everyone had moved to dedicated ASICs but apparently not
IamNotAshamed
For BTC yes, not for other coins like ETH though
chargeling
Some are made to be difficult to mine on ASICs.
GPUs have high resale value when you are done
WhellerNG
Nvidia is trying real hard to make that not true with their new line of mining GPUs. They don’t have ports on them so useless for non mining
jeanyx
Depends if they burn them out trying to mine fast or if they undervolt to reduce "wear and tear" on the hardware.

Not really now in when people under produce for the numbers they know people will want to buy specifically to keep increased high
FrontPageIsAHoax
And bots driving up the prices...

Artisanbuilds built A 30k miner yesterday, 8 3090s ...

Are those Linus pillows in the background? WTF
EricPisch
Yea lol
EricPisch
Building a second one right now

I don't think I'll ever understand how mining works. How do you mine numbers and why does it need lots of GPU juice.
thisistheinternetimheretotellliesandarguewithstrangers
I can tell you this much. I don't understand either.
ImaginaryMamboNumber5
Because GPUs have lots and lots of cores that can each do calculations. The mining is solving complex number problems in little chunks.
ImaginaryMamboNumber5
Not sure why someone decided that was worth something though...
jmbmpt
I wanted someone to briefly and simply explain that, like to a really dumb fucking guy. A friend of mine.
TakeTheStairs
dude go to youtube. its such a huge topic that making it clear 140 at a time will be very hard. visual aides help also.
Lightsmith
Do they need graphics cards for number mining? Genuine question.
sadurdaynight
They're using the gpu's to create massive parallel processing crunchers while the cpu is the workload director.
EricPisch
GPUs are hugely powerful at computational computing
somewhatparanoidpanda
CPUs have 4-12 powerful cores tha can run code, GPUs have 100s-1000s of small cores that can run smaller programs. They were built to make
somewhatparanoidpanda
Calculating the millions of pixels and 3D vectors for uh graphics but are really good at solving math that requires brute force
ImaginaryMamboNumber5
I thought everyone had moved to dedicated ASICs but apparently not
IamNotAshamed
For BTC yes, not for other coins like ETH though
chargeling
Some are made to be difficult to mine on ASICs.
EricPisch
GPUs have high resale value when you are done
WhellerNG
Nvidia is trying real hard to make that not true with their new line of mining GPUs. They don’t have ports on them so useless for non mining
jeanyx
Depends if they burn them out trying to mine fast or if they undervolt to reduce "wear and tear" on the hardware.
