In the spring of 1945, deep in the vaults of a bank in Magdeburg, the U.S. Army uncovered a hidden Reichsbank cache containing the equivalent of $280 million in cash. Lieutenant Colonel Ben Thompson and Virgil Happy can be seen holding thick bundles of Reichsmarks as casually as if they were ordinary bricks, and there is a harsh historical explanation for this.

This photograph is not a chronicle of striking it rich, but the documentation of a collapse. The shelves are stacked with tons of banknotes that German officials had frantically evacuated from the capital to save them from the advancing Allied armies. However, while the money was being stuffed into safes, the economy of the Third Reich completely ceased to exist. At the moment the camera flashed, the officers were inspecting not a priceless treasure trove, but mountains of scrap paper. The currency of an entire nation was rapidly plummeting in value, turning into worthless paper and free exotic souvenirs for American GIs.

TIL "restorations" turn a captains bars into a funny little wizard thing.

If you think about it, and it's a bit scary, it'll NEVER make that mistake again.

When my Dad served in Germany (mid 80's), he said some people started using Deutsche Marks as wallpaper or kindling...

I was told the same. They were burning cash to heat the home. Literally.

Do you use AI to "restore" all your photos?

1 day ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 6

Do you accuse all photo restoration, which is literally 1800s technology, of being ai.

For “restore,” I use AI and Photoshop.

Funny how "Deutsche Reichsmark" became "Dclxl DverLrnrexte".

Some other images on the Internet show "20000 Reichsmark" written on this pack, I have no idea whether they are correctly reconstructed though. This here is a shame of course.

You’re right. I did a bit of digging and found a higher-resolution version of the photo. It’s still not perfect, but yeah, it definitely says “20,000 Reichsmark”.

don't call it restoration when an AI just guesses what it looks like. fuck right off

I literally called it a reconstruction, not a restoration. When the original details are completely destroyed, rebuilding them is the only option. There is no need to be rude.

it's also not a reconstruction. it's just random guessing. it's just funny how every AI user is not disclosing using AI. you know it's wrong but still want to use it.

I fully disclosed it. This post literally has an AI tag, and I explicitly mentioned using AI and Photoshop in another comment right here. You are getting angry over a narrative you made up.

1 day ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

you know. the narrative is not made up. you didn't mention your usage of AI in your lengthy description and even state that you're doing "restoration". just because THIS post is using "reconstruction" doesn't make your actions more valid. i can't change your mind about AI. you're already to deep into this. i just hope you know you made just shareholders more happy by lying to your customers

I'll explicitly point out the use of AI in the next post. Have a good day.
